Dunno, I don't think the play calling helped too much. Once we started actually running the ball, they had some nice runs.

They were doing their diligence and sticking to honing/executing that Smith wide zone...

Pack D played it very well for most of the game imo.

We've had some great backs here over the years and I'd love to see it happen again next draft.

The wide zone scheme takes a little bit of time with the OL. You can practice it all day long, but the game speed timing takes a bit. You have to figure out how long to hold a block before swinging out, you have to know how many steps to get outside, you have to feel when your backside blocking is moving across. None of this can really be practiced even in Preseason games. It's a timing and feel thing that takes some reps. I would say by game 5 or 6 it will look much better overall.

Leber mentioned the wide zone in his comments after the game. Said Gannon was expecting the wide zone runs and played them well. Once we started running more up the middle, their D wasn't able to adjust and were confused. KOC still needs to work on his running game, but kudos for adjusting. Wonder if this was Smith's influence?
