Wasn't that after Rhodes and Waynes signed big contracts elsewhere? Without real dbs, the defense struggled. Barr also missed most of 2020.

Sure that could play into it too. that would probably tie back to cousins on the books. Or those guys were on the downside? Don’t recall.

Indeed, a major problem with Zimmer's defense was that he required great corners. Those are very hard to find (we tried multiple first round picks and came up empty) and expensive to retain. It is one of the aspects that I like about Flores defense. He can manage with capable to good corners. He requires a great pass rush. But that pass rush can come from anywhere. He is able to adapt to the strengths of the players and rush DL, OLB, ILB, safetys, and corners. This is unlike, say, a Tampa 2 defense that also needs a great pass rush, but specifically from the front 4. Without 4 great DL, you can't win (we saw this under Frasier).

Zimmer was the defensive genius before Flores came along. He innovated every year. The Double A gap rocked the league, teams didn't have an answer for it. And the next year he had something else. He was doing stuff in coverage that was crazy as well, just doesn't get the attention of sacks and pressure. Under Zim was the first I heard of pattern matching coverage, couple that with the pressure, it was fun to watch.

Oh, no doubt that Zim had his creative chops. But Barr in a 6-1 or straight 3-4 edge was what he was meant for.
