Roger Goodell: I have no doubt there will be NFL teams outside the United States

As the NFL continues to play more of its games outside the United States, it’s only a matter of time before NFL teams operate from overseas and permanently play their home games other countries.

That’s the word from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who said teams located in other countries are inevitable.

“At some point, there will be NFL teams outside the USA. I have no doubt that this will happen one day,” Goodell told former NFL player Markus Kuhn in interview for German broadcaster RTL/ntv.

Goodell said that once an NFL team is established in a foreign country, its home field could host a Super Bowl.

“There are definitely international cities that could host something like that,” Goodell said of the Super Bowl. “But we would like to see an NFL team in such a city first.”

The NFL will play an all-time high nine games outside the United States this season, with three in England and one each in Australia, Brazil, France, Spain, Germany and Mexico. That’s still a far cry from one team playing eight or nine home games a year, every year, in a foreign country. But Goodell is sure that’s coming.

I'd believe Canada and Mexico would be in play. I just don't see how Europe is in play.

I think Europe games make sense when both teams are equally disadvantaged. I don’t know how you’d set a German team up. They’d have 8-9 games where they are playing on 6-9 hour time difference. Similarly, every team they face would be equally off kilter.

Financially, those two areas are down the list. London makes a ton of sense, big equity already there for NFL fanbases. Its around 7 hours, give or take, for a flight from London to New York....my wife flew to Seattle over the weekend and it was 6 and a half hours from Ft Lauderdale. So when Miami plays Seattle....what's the difference?
