The Charles Demmings Lottery Ticket Could Have A Big Payoff

Fiscal responsibility has never been a skill that comes naturally to me. Despite constant financial pressure on the back of our necks for most of our marriage, my wife often has to get on me about too many trips to the fast-food drive-thru or my brand loyalty to generics at the grocery store. Actually keeping to a budget requires a level of discipline that I lack.

The Minnesota Vikings’ front office hasn’t been very responsible with their finances over the past few years, either. But I can appreciate that, at the very least, they’ve identified areas where they’re willing to live without luxuries and have stuck to it.

In the Brian Flores era, that’s been at cornerback. I can just imagine the bright-eyed college scouts trying to sell the coaching staff to take CB Chris Johnson or Avieon Terrell in this past draft class, only for Flores to shut that down because they’ve got James Pierre at home.

Flores’ philosophy of bargain shopping at their CB2-CB4 spots has worked out for the Vikings. His defenses have mostly given opponents fits without elite coverage on the back end. With Flores, pressure is coverage. With the amount of time, effort, and energy they dedicate to their front seven and pressure packages comes the calculated risk of getting by with store-brand corners on the back end. Despite succeeding while operating this way, it has left many fans longing for what this defense could look like with a few more trustworthy playmakers out in coverage.

So, when a young rookie corner starts making a name for himself in camp, it should garner our attention.

Charles Demmings didn’t exactly develop at an NFL factory in Stephen F. Austin. But a glance at his measurables might catch your eye: 6’1″ with 4.41 speed and 32” arms is a pretty ideal physical profile for a corner. Demmings was productive in college, albeit at a lower level of play in the Southland Conference. Still, that jump in competition made Demmings a pretty obvious project player over a ready-made starter.

That’s not how local writers have started talking about him, though.

The Athletic’s Alec Lewis described Demmings as the “early star of camp” in a recent piece highlighting his excellent communication skills and his confidence in coverage.

“Demmings’ positive reception in Minnesota has coincided with strong play,” Lewis continued. “Through seven training camp practices, few Vikings players have made more eye-popping plays. Last weekend, Demmings broke up a pass intended for superstar receiver Justin Jefferson, and he swatted away another directed at receiver Tai Felton on Wednesday.”

He’s also quickly becoming a fan favorite and “glue guy” amongst the locker room, according to Brian Flores.

But for all the fun philosophical quotes and freestyle rapping skills, it’s Demmings’ fearlessness in practice to line up and perform against the likes of Jefferson and Addison that should get fans really excited if his physical tools are holding up against some of the best in the league on his own roster.

That could bode well for Demmings’ future in Minnesota — particularly because they aren’t asking the world of Demmings immediately. Demmings is competing with Isaiah Rodgers and James Pierre for snaps to see occasional field time as the third cornerback; they aren’t asking him to lock down Amon-Ra St. Brown.

But the physical upside combined with such an early proof of concept on Demmings is already a heck of a payoff on a fifth-round dart throw. And this team will need to capitalize on these types of bargains and lottery tickets if their secondary is going to take it to the next level.

Flores has built an excellent defense, but it’s not invulnerable. Teams that have managed to block up their pressure packages and spam zone beaters like the Detroit Lions or Los Angeles Rams in ‘24 have punished their inability to hold up for longer stretches in coverage.

Signing Isaiah Rodgers in ‘25 was a big boost, and Charles Demmings’ emergence alongside budget free agent James Pierre could all be examples of low-cost investments paying off far above expectations. Demmings still has a long way to go before I’m anointing him as a franchise cornerstone. Still, if the early buzz in camp can hold through the preseason, then he could be setting himself up for a legitimate impact as a rookie this season.

He’s got plenty of work in front of him, but I’ll close with the wise words of Demmings himself: “A fool prays for an easy road, wise men pray for stronger legs.”

Hope he works out. I wasn't impressed with James Pierre. They may need someone else to step up.
