4 Things the Vikings’ Preseason Opener Can Reveal That Training Camp Can’t

John Harbaugh’s first whiff of semi-real football as the head coach of the New York Giants will come Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings, as the NFL preseason is underway. Training camp has already settled some Vikings-themed mysteries – – Kyler Murray took home the QB1 bacon after a battle with J.J. McCarthy – – but more will be gleaned from the preseason.

Here’s what Saturday’s game will help illuminate that perhaps training camp cannot.

The Questions Only a Game Can Answer

1. Does Kyler Murray’s Command Travel?

Head coach Kevin O’Connell named Murray the QB1 for the 2026 season this week, ending the oft-advertised quarterback battle after two weeks. Now, O’Connell and the rest of the coaches and players get to see how Murray looks in a Vikings uniform outside the friendly confines of Eagan.

Training camp allows O’Connell to call the shots. A preseason game, however, gives an unfamiliar defense and an opportunity to communicate with teammates who haven’t spent three weeks studying the opponent’s tendencies.

O’Connell mentioned Murray on Tuesday, “I think he’s ultracompetitive. It’s clear he loves football. I think he carries a certain amount of presence to him when he walks in the huddle.”

“He may not be the rah-rah guy and the guy everybody looks to for that energy explosion like some of our other captains or leaders that we’ve had here, but I think it’s going to be his presence and professional approach and hopefully his improvement and comfort so the truest, best version of him can come out in our offense, which is what we’ve tried to do in the past with other quarterbacks as well.”

Fans will basically get to see if Murray has the early juice to run the offense efficiently. O’Connell has already stated that Murray and McCarthy will play on Saturday.

2. Charles Demmings Watch

Selected in Round 5 back in April, this rookie cornerback wasn’t supposed to be this good – – this soon. All rookies and 5th-rounders especially take time to adjust, but Demmings appears to have skipped that process, balling out at training camp and tormenting Minnesota’s best receivers.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores hasn’t been shy about Demmings: “Chuck D, he’s a very confident individual. He’s done a good job so far and just continuing to improve on a daily basis.”

The first preseason presents several challenges: unfamiliar routes and an offense Demmings hasn’t practiced against daily. A cornerback might excel in camp when plays conclude at the catch, but on Saturday, Demmings will need to tackle the receiver. His physical play will also be scrutinized by live officials, and he will inevitably be beaten off the line at some point. The question is, how quickly can his top-tier athleticism recover and get him back into the play?

Saturday might begin to reveal how soon Minnesota can entrust Demmings with regular season defensive responsibilities.

3. Demond Claiborne in a Live Game

The Vikings haven’t employed a dynamic young running back since Dalvin Cook in his early 20s – – about a decade ago. It’s time for another, and with any luck, that could be Claiborne, a rookie 6th-rounder from Wake Forest.

It’s already firmly established that Claiborne is fast as hell. No one disputes it. But what happens before he even starts unleashing the dazzling speed? Can Claiborne anticipate holes opening up without a practice script? Can he spot an NFL blitzer and react in time? Can his 188-pound frame withstand the initial hit, and will he maintain possession of the ball after being tackled? After dropping some passes earlier in camp, can he reliably catch the ball now? Furthermore, if Minnesota places him on kickoff returns, will his 4.37 speed truly make a difference across 50 yards of open field?

Claiborne’s teammate, Aaron Jones, said of Claiborne in June, “You can tell he’s special when he steps out there on the field. He has a different gear to him. Honestly, he looks a little bit like Jahmyr Gibbs in terms of that speed, and that burst, so I’m excited to see it during games, as well.”

A handful of Vikings fans had big plans for 2023 rookie running back DeWayne McBride. He didn’t last long. Saturday will be the first test to determine if Claiborne is different. All signs point to yes.

4. The Punter Battle

Johnny Hekker, a veteran with over a decade in the NFL, faces off against Brett Thorson, who brings rookie potential and a 2025 Ray Guy Award to the competition. The deciding factor in this Hekker vs. Thorson battle might be their proficiency in holding field goals and extra points for All-Pro kicker Will Reichard.

Thorson has been booming punts in camp and improving his holding skills to date at camp. However, Hekker’s extensive experience gives him a natural edge in the intricate details of the job. The matchup truly presents worlds colliding, with Hekker’s seasoned expertise pitted against Thorson’s burgeoning talent.

With the quarterback battle settled, the punter competition is a sneaky preseason storyline to monitor for the rest of the month.
