Jake Golday's Outlook Could Be Limited by One Vikings Veteran's Strong Camp Performance

It seems like the rookie LB will have to be patient if he has his eyes on a starting job.

The Vikings drafted linebacker Jake Golday out of Cincinnati in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The intriguing prospect is a unique fit for the team because of his ability to play as an interior linebacker or play on the edge, making him one of Minnesota's rookies to watch during training camp.

Golday's versatility makes him an extremely valuable piece in defensive coordinator Brian Flores's unit. However, being able to play two positions makes it more difficult to establish him as a starter who will fill a particular role in the upcoming season.

On the edge and the inside, the Purple and Gold have several veterans—Andrew Van Ginkel, Dallas Turner and Eric Wilson—already occupying key roles, as well as another linebacker whose strong offseason performance could limit Golday's workload when the Vikings take the field against the Packers in Week 1.

Blake Cashman's strong training camp is holding off Jake Golday

Golday will eventually be a major contributor for the Vikings, but he may have to assume a backup or rotational role for the upcoming season. Taking a starting job (or even a 53-man roster spot) from one of the other linebackers is an uphill climb, and standing in his way is none other than Blake Cashman.

On the surface, Cashman should be the most threatened by the possible emergence of Golday, but a strong training camp and familiarity with the defense will make it hard for the rookie to unseat the veteran defender.

Cashman has been dealing with a finger injury that put his availability into question since the start of training camp, but that issue has been put to rest after he looked great at practice and made an astounding number of plays. He's been practicing with the first team, capitalizing on those opportunities with his interception against J.J. McCarthy on Aug. 1 being one example.

After Sunday night's practice, Bring Me The News' Will Ragatz even lauded Cashman's success against Kyler Murray in practice.

Blake Cashman and the Vikings' first-team defense just completely wrecked a drive for the starting offense. Nothing Murray could do. This defense looks as scary as ever with Brian Flores at the controls.

The good news for Golday is that Cashman is in the final season of his three-year, $22.5 million contract. Minnesota has had no problem moving on from higher-priced veterans in favor of youth and potential recently, so it might not be too long before the 23-year-old defender earns a starting role.

Until then, the Vikings will likely lean on Cashman to hold down the starting interior linebacker job next to Wilson in Flores's defense. Doing so allows Golday to move around the defense and play more situational football at multiple positions.

That versatility is a huge bonus for the team since it also allows the rookie time to develop and acclimate to the NFL level before being thrust into a starting role. And there is nothing wrong with having talent on the depth chart past the players who are named starters.

But, but... what?

This article makes no sense. I don't think anyone ever thought Cashman's job was in jeopardy. Not this year anyway. Not shooting the messenger, but wow this article was a waste of space.

I thought it was just me.
