J.J. McCarthy Will Have 3 Paths Left if Kyler Murray Wins QB1

The Minnesota Vikings’ widely broadcast quarterback battle is about 11 days old, and unless something drastically changes at training camp or in the preseason games, the tide feels like it has turned in Kyler Murray’s favor to earn the QB1 job, with J.J. McCarthy trending toward QB2.

And because McCarthy spent 10 games of 2025 as the QB1 and was once considered the quarterback of the future, one must wonder what happens to McCarthy if (when?) Murray wins the battle. Here are the scenarios.

Vikings Don’t Need to Rush the McCarthy Decision

1. McCarthy Stays Put and Develops as QB2 — Everyone Is Happy about It

This is McCarthy’s wisest path, especially if it’s important to him to save face. Murray may be named the QB1 within a week or two, and McCarthy must decide if he wants to handle it with professionalism.

Then, he’d remain on the depth chart as the QB2, a snap away from the job he held in 2025, in which case he’d have a grand opportunity to retake the QB1 job and never relinquish it. Never forget: Murray has missed 26% of all career games due to injury. One Murray injury would allow McCarthy to hop under center and showcase his revised mechanics and overall development.

McCarthy said in June, “I think I made it very clear I wanted to be here before I got here. I love this organization. I love the coaching staff. I absolutely love these players to death. This is where I want to be. I feel like I can thrive in this system.”

“Everything played out exactly how I wanted it. I wouldn’t want anything else to change.”

Based on that remark, No. 1 on this list is the likeliest outcome – – McCarthy carries himself like a professional.

From a Vikings’ standpoint, McCarthy accepting his demotion and remaining hungry to embrace an eventual 8 Mile moment is the best outcome.

2. Vikings Explore McCarthy’s Trade Market

This is the aggressive option. If Murray wins QB1 and Minnesota begins to view him as a long-term asset rather than a one-year rental, McCarthy’s remaining rookie-contract control becomes a huge advantage. Waiting another year could diminish his trade value, as a team acquiring him would have less time under his favorable, cost-controlled contract.

And there are two angles here: a) McCarthy personally requests a trade; b) The Vikings, not McCarthy, lead the conversation with other NFL teams. Don’t forget that Minnesota already fired the guy who drafted McCarthy in January. They created McCarthy’s off-ramp the moment they fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah – – if they want it.

NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero opined in June, “Let’s say Kyler wins the job. If you had to lean one way or another, sitting right here, I would lean toward Kyler as the starting quarterback. Do you have J.J. as the backup? Do you potentially look to trade him while there’s still some intrigue within the league?”

“You might be able to get more for him with two years left on his rookie contract than with one year left. Those are all things that I would think you’re going to talk through.”

August 2026 is probably the last best chance to get a mid-round pick for McCarthy. His value may go south from here.

Generally speaking, a trade isn’t inevitable. While Carson Wentz provides Minnesota with veteran QB2 insurance, trading McCarthy would mean losing their only young quarterback with long-term upside (unless one has big plans for Max Brosmer).

The approach offers a handful of possibilities: Murray could play well and earn an extension, Murray could disappoint, McCarthy could get another opportunity, or another team could show interest in McCarthy next offseason.

Messaging from the coaching staff and front office would be crucial here. Head coach Kevin O’Connell would insist the summer quarterback battle was neck and neck, and he’d also probably reference how two of the last three Vikings seasons were upended by quarterback injuries.

No matter how McCarthy feels about the QB2 job, O’Connell could tell the world that he’s happy to have both quarterbacks and that a trade is not on the table.
