Former Vikings LB Explains What Could Trigger Harrison Smith’s Return

Since the middle of January, Minnesota Vikings fans have remained on “Harrison Smith Watch,” wondering if the longtime veteran safety would retire or return. Fast forward to training camp, and the mystery remains. Thankfully, former Vikings linebacker Pete Bercich shed some light this week, explaining that Smith could survey the lay of the land after joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens and go from there.

In short, Smith’s decision could be accelerated by an injury; otherwise, it’s more wait-and-see.

The Preseason Could Determine Smith’s Timeline

Bercich sat down with FOX9’s Jim Rich on Sunday night, with five days of Vikings training camp in the books. The pair discussed the Vikings’ quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy – – everybody does — but also mentioned Smith. Bercich wasn’t reporting inside information about Smith’s intentions but rather outlining the circumstances that could make a reunion more likely.

“I don’t think that decision is imminent. Let’s see how the preseason goes. Let’s see if everybody stays healthy when Baltimore comes to town. If, for some reason, you lose a guy or two, then I think it’s more likely that he’s going to come back sooner,” Bercich opined when asked about a possible timetable.

“It depends on the physical condition that he’s in. According to Coach O’Connell, he and Harrison talk all the time – – or they talk quite often – – so I’m sure they’ve spoken and had this conversation.”

The Vikings begin joint practices with the Ravens on August 19th.

Bercich also said about Smith and Brian Flores’s defense, “That’s what I love about Brian Flores and his scheme. He’s so versatile and can do so many different things. When he has a Harrison Smith back there whom he can trust, Harrison can direct traffic. He can check a blitz from this side to that side and do what Harrison Smith does.”

The logic here goes like this: if a safety like Josh Metellus, Jay Ward, or Theo Jackson got hurt in the next two weeks, that might trigger Smith’s phone call to his agent. Stay tuned.

The Example from Last Year

Bercich also asserted that Smith took it easy last summer, too, while battling an unknown ailment: “Smith missed all of training camp last year, if you remember. It wasn’t until the second half of the season, toward the end of the season, that he played a lot more. That’s when Flores turned over a lot more of the checks to him and let him quarterback the defense a little bit more.”

That statement jibes with one fan-driven theory: Smith could return in the middle of the season if needed. For example, merging both worlds, perhaps Smith will remain within reach throughout the 2026 campaign if injuries require his return.

The Safety Situation without Him

Without Smith, Metellus is on deck for the most substantial leadership role of his career. For six seasons, he’s played alongside Smith – – quite the anchor. Metellus is undoubtedly preparing for a Vikings defense sans Smith; that’s all one can do during limbo.

Metellus said about Smith in June, “The dynamic that me and 22 had when he was here, he’s not that guy who’s going to be a loud, screaming, vocal guy. So once I stepped into my leadership role years ago, he kind of let me handle that.”

“So on that forefront, it’s nothing too different. I’ve always been the vocal guy, the guy to take charge by action and voice.”

Then, a younger safety, like the aforementioned Ward or Jackson, will presumably experience a spike in playing time. The Vikings also drafted Miami’s Jakobe Thomas in Round 3 back in April, along with signing Jamal Adams last week, a linebacker who began his career as a safety nearly a decade ago.

It’s Metellus for sure and “we’ll see” on his running mate – – unless Smith returns.

The Adam Thielen + C.J. Ham Theory

Smith has to be at least considering a return if one reads the tarot cards. His teammates, Thielen and Ham, retired in March after illustrious careers. That was the perfect opportunity to go out with his pals. In fact, retiring with Thielen and Ham would’ve been one of the most momentous events in recent Vikings history.

The 37-year-old also said one time that when he retired, no one would know. He’s that modest and humble.

But according to Bercich, necessity could be the driving force of his return. He’d probably come back if his former teammates and coaches needed him. Bercich’s argument is simply that Minnesota has little reason to force the issue. If the secondary remains healthy and performs well, the waiting game can continue. If August exposes a problem, No. 22 may become considerably more relevant.

VikesNow Verdict: Bercich’s scenario is plausible because Smith knows Flores’s defense well enough to join later than a typical veteran signing. The Vikings can spend August evaluating Jackson, Ward, Thomas, and the rest of the secondary without forcing a decision. But injuries – – or an inability to replace Smith’s pre-snap command – – could quickly transform a reunion into a genuine need.
