Dallas Turner can erase one looming Vikings problem before it begins

Dallas Turner enters training camp carrying a job the Minnesota Vikings can’t afford to see him fumble. Jonathan Greenard is gone; Turner is the featured pass rusher, and Brian Flores needs the first-round pick to handle more snaps and attention with less protection from the depth chart.

Turner earned the promotion with career highs in 2025. He recorded 66 tackles, eight sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles. His career totals sit at 86 tackles, 11 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, four pass breakups and one interception.

Greenard’s trade to the Philadelphia Eagles saved Minnesota from chasing the four-year, $100 million extension he received afterward, making Turner’s next step essential for the deal to pay off. The Vikings chose a 23-year-old on a rookie contract over an established veteran, which looks clever only if the younger player's trajectory keeps pointing up.

Eight sacks won’t guarantee that Turner handles a season as a starter. Opponents can slide protection toward him, test his discipline against the run, and force him to win after his first move stalls.

If pressures disappear between occasional sacks, Minnesota may have to explore the veteran market immediately -- or risk becoming overly dependent on Andrew Van Ginkel.

Van Ginkel gives Flores a proven starter on the other side, but the reserve group gets thin quickly.

Bo Richter, Chaz Chambliss and Tyler Batty bring special-teams value and developmental intrigue. None has shown he can rescue a pass rush for two months if Turner struggles or gets hurt.

Joey Bosa, Jadeveon Clowney, Kyle Van Noy and Von Miller remain free-agent options. But each comes with age, injury, or recent production concerns.

One could provide 25 useful snaps per game without blocking Turner’s future, although Bosa would likely cost more than Minnesota wants for emergency insurance.

A trade becomes more plausible once other teams sort through their camp competitions. Minnesota could target a veteran squeezed by a younger player once another team decides it has more edge rushers than roster spots.

Giving up draft compensation would hurt, though, after the Greenard decision was partly about saving resources.

Turner can settle the issue by producing steady pressure throughout camp. If he can’t, Minnesota could be forced to dip into the veteran market.
