Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy will split reps to open QB competition
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell, asked about the plan at quarterback, said both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy will split first-team reps and second-team reps to begin training camp. O'Connell said the coaching evaluation of this competition will be meticulous.
"We want to be thorough and comprehensive with this, but at the same time ... when we're ready to move forward, it'll be good to do that so we can prepare that player for the season and give our team and players clarity on the direction we're going," he said.
O'Connell added that he met with each quarterback individually after they reported to the team facility on Sunday.
Murray and McCarthy are expected to split first-team reps within practices, O'Connell said. "It doesn't need to be 50-50 [each day]," but coaches will keep tabs on how many reps each guy gets over the course of camp and adjust accordingly.

Nolan Teasley praises Brian O'Neill
New Vikings GM Nolan Teasley is discussing one of his first big deals in Minnesota, the extension for right tackle Brian O'Neill: "Working in Seattle, you're aware of what a great player he is. Coming into the building, it's a privilege to get to know him as a person. ... Everyone holds him in such high regard. He's a foundational piece and we're very pleased to keep him here for a long time."

Kevin O'Connell disappointed by Gerald Alexander's arrest
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell begins his training camp news conference addressing defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander's DUI arrest in the spring: "Disappointed is the word," said O'Connell, who suspended Alexander for the first three weeks of training camp. "He knows he needs to make better decisions moving forward. He's a valued member of my staff."
As to why that is, O'Connell referenced Alexander's experience working with defensive coordinator Brian Flores in Pittsburgh. Alexander steps into big shoes replacing former defensive backs coach Daronte Jones, who left this spring for a promotion to be the Commanders defensive coordinator.

#Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell says there’s “an ideal date” to decide who the teams QB 1 is. He says it’s subjective to how the QB play is during camp.

Kevin O'Connell has a timeline for the QB competition ... but isn't sharing
Kevin O'Connell said he's got a timeline in mind for naming a starting QB, but did not explicitly outline it publicly.
Regarding Kyler Murray's readiness and education in the offense, O'Connell said Murray looked good in the spring: "Our offense is maybe different than what he's been accustomed to ... there's a reason why we made sure there's always an ability to make edits to the playbook."
O'Connell then discussed the importance of the run game, which he has called a "major emphasis" for this year's team.

Nolan Teasley, Kevin O'Connell discuss Kyler Murray's fit in Minnesota
Vikings GM Nolan Teasley on facing Kyler Murray in Seattle for many years: "He was a No. 1 pick for a reason. It's not just what he can do with his arm and operating on schedule ... excited to see what he can do in this system ... but it's the extension of the play and what he can do in that arena as well."
O'Connell on Murray's fit with his offense: "He's always been an accurate passer. You study him, the rhythm of the game and when he's in that rhythm, you feel his ability to be in command and move his team. ... Not only steal some first downs with his legs, but he can get a lot more than that. As guys learn throughout their career, no matter their skill set ... it's about maximizing each play."
O'Connell again mentions how important it is for the Vikings QB to limit turnovers in his offense.
"Kyler has demonstrated an ability to do that at a high level," O'Connell added.

“If there’s a good football out there, we’re actively discussing and pursuing it, finding ways to improve our roster.”

Christian Darrisaw's knee not a concern
Kevin O'Connell said that left tackle Christian Darrisaw does not have any lingering concerns from his October 2024 knee injury that continued to limit him last season.
That said, O'Connell noted that there are training camp "plans" for every player to keep them as healthy as possible through a strenuous stretch of workouts, specifically those coming off injury or who've previously experienced significant injuries like Darrisaw.
"He's had a healthy offseason, and he's really built up to a place where I know he's excited to get going," O'Connell said. "Training camp can be a grind, and we want our players to experience that, but still take an individual approach to how we best prepare those 53-plus guys to be ready to go."

Nolan Teasley committed to the process
New Vikings GM Nolan Teasley continued to emphasize how process-driven he is in his few answers Tuesday, just his second time talking formally with Twin Cities media.
He said conversations with defensive coordinator Brian Flores and personnel staff were what excited him most about acquiring linebacker Jamal Adams, who the Vikings officially signed Tuesday morning.
"Getting in, again, to the specific skill set of what [Adams] does well and then what Flo asks players or what he can give them the freedom to do within his system. I think those things align," Teasley said. "To me, that's good process, and we'll see about the result."

Yup, that and this...If they are doing a good job of listening and incorporating? That can really have a significant impact. A bit under the radar perhaps but so damn important:

More of Kevin O'Connell's thoughts on QB competition
Coming back to the QB1 decision timeline, here's what Kevin O'Connell said in full when asked about if he has a date in mind: "I think there's an ideal date based upon training camp to make sure we check a lot of boxes for our team, but also for not only that player, but our entire offense. So yeah, there's absolutely a date in mind, subject to what we think is best. If we feel like we can make a decision before that date, we will, if we feel like we need a little bit more time, we'll take it. Ultimately, a lot of work's been done to this point and been evaluated, both on the field, where we think guys are at from their understanding and comfort of our offense. Now we can apply it and really try to push this thing to the point where I think it's gonna enhance both players, and I think it's gonna give us clarity on where we need to go for this year."
Later, he clarified the decision will be announced publicly within a timely manner of it being made.
"If you guys are alright with it, they'll probably be the first to know, but then yeah," O'Connell said.
