Kyler Murray gets distilled to almost a caricature.

But his career, his play style, his perception actually requires heaps of nuance.

Here’s why coaches, executives and former teammates are high on the possibilities of this current opportunity

Only one team gets to win at all each year. The Rams look really good assuming they don’t have it key injuries. They could be hard to get past.

The Rams should have won it all last year. Really bad PI call to seal the game for the Seahawks when the refs were not calling that all game. Weird time to make the call at that point in time of the game.

Then he has no excuses. I want to see him handle himself better on the sidelines and take responsibility for things he does wrong. Not just make excuses for them but actually take accountability. I don't want to see on field antics or poor body language. Be a leader. That is what I want to see. Bring your team up.

One former Cardinals executive, who was not authorized to speak publicly about Murray, added: “He has always wanted to be held accountable. I think a lack of that at times may have led to some of the inconsistencies. If I was a betting man, I would bet that you’re going to see some wild s— this year. To have the talent he is, with the talent (the Vikings) have, and to have O’Connell, who has a great mind and a great way of seeing it, they could be a really scary team.”

Why Kyler Murray’s fit with the Vikings is inspiring optimism headed into training camp

The possibility of this partnership intrigued football folks everywhere.

High school coaches in Texas heard and sent each other emoji-laden messages. Arizona Cardinals executives and coaches caught wind and whispered about the fit at the NFL Scouting Combine. Even Lincoln Riley, while preparing for a critical season at USC, took time out of his day to verify whether his former quarterback at Oklahoma, Kyler Murray, could be headed north to the Minnesota Vikings.

“When that was first starting to come together,” Riley said in a phone interview last week, “I was really excited.”

Once the signing with the Vikings was official, one of Murray’s coaches with the Cardinals, who requested anonymity to be candid about a former player, put the prevailing opinion bluntly.

“I think you’re about to see the best version of Kyler Murray,” this coach said. “And I’m f—ing pissed that I’m not going to get to be a part of it. I’m going to be jealous when he’s in a good environment, his headspace is good, and he shows people who the f— he is.”

Understanding this positivity requires nuance, which is often fleeting when it comes to a quarterback whose career has become almost a caricature.

You can guess how many will react to a mention of Murray. Jokes emerge about his height (he’s 5 feet 10). Call of Duty comes up. Four years later, the infamous study clause lingers.

His playing style also conjures a clear picture. Murray, the prevailing thought goes, prefers to scamper his way through defenses rather than deliver from the pocket.

Lob the low-hanging fruit to those who spent meaningful time around Murray, and the responses range. Some speak disparagingly about Murray’s introverted nature, and others prefer not to ding him. Some fixate on his emotional on-field demeanor, and others praise his reactions as expressions of passion tied to his want to win. Some question his work habits, and others swear by how much he cares.

In fact, talking to executives, coaches, and teammates about him felt like a Rorschach test. The responses revealed as much about quarterback leadership philosophies, the role of media narratives in players’ careers and organizational impact on success and failure as they did about the 28-year-old Heisman winner.

Most agreed on one critical conclusion: Murray’s linking up with the Vikings would produce the best possible outcome for the 2019 No. 1 pick.

“I think how his career has gone the last two or three years has been necessary for his growth,” said Chase Edmonds, a former teammate of Murray’s who played last year for the Washington Commanders. “The Vikings are going to be getting the best Kyler Murray that anyone has ever seen in terms of consistency.”

“He is not an idiot, and neither is his inner circle,” said Jordan Hogan, a former Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers assistant. “Being in the NFC West, he knows what this type of offense is about. He wants to live in the pocket. He wants to be a pocket passer. He doesn’t want to run around because that’s how you get hurt at that level, and he knows that.”

O’Connell hasn’t won a playoff game in his four seasons in Minnesota, but his success with established quarterbacks speaks to why the Vikings signed Murray. O’Connell secured the unwavering commitment of Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold. Operating this complex system, which asks the quarterback to put the offense in the best play before the snap, requires nothing less.

It also helps when a team’s most talented player demands a palpable degree of intensity. Especially after a clunker of a season in 2025, superstar receiver Justin Jefferson won’t settle for anything other than maniacal attention to detail on and off the field.

These conditions create a level of urgency, the backdrop many of Murray’s former coaches think set him up to thrive.

“He’s a competitor,” said Autry Denson, the Cardinals’ running backs coach from 2023 to 2025. “When you challenge a competitor, you know what they’re going to do? They’re going to compete. Challenge him. Hold him accountable. There was not a malicious bone in his body.”

Those who know Murray say he understands the magnitude of the moment. Struggle in 2026, and he will join the pool of former first-round picks fighting for a meaningful future in the NFL. Thrive, and a massive free-agent contract looms.

In recent years, Cardinals coaches pushed for improved interior protection to no avail. Without accomplished vertical threats, they designed a conservative offense built for Murray to get rid of the ball quickly to receivers such as elite tight end Trey McBride. A diminished run game after James Conner’s ankle injury in Week 3 left a nonexplosive passing attack with few ways to generate offensive momentum.

“We tried to be as much ‘quick game’ as possible from a protection mindset,” the former Cardinals coach who spoke on the condition of anonymity said. “If he plays the way (O’Connell) wants him to play and he plays on time, and his feet and eyes are timed up, he won’t have any issue.”

Minnesota’s offensive infrastructure should prevent many of these variables from muddying the evaluation.

The Vikings boast multiple field-stretching receivers. They have one of the highest-paid offensive lines in the league. They have a locker room that has proved its willingness to embrace different personalities at the quarterback position. There’s little room for excuses.

This is not to say there won’t be hurdles. Former coaches mentioned the effect interior leakage can have on Murray’s vision. They also noted concerns with deep-drop concepts and how hits affect Murray given his compact frame.

Another consideration? Because Murray has played mostly from the shotgun, and because O’Connell’s system likes to position the quarterback under center to take advantage of the run-pass option, both sides must adapt.

Tweaking can take time. It can cause stress. But the best quarterbacks ultimately find a way, and the circumstances for this team and player remove any reticence to being malleable.

“If I were a Vikings fan,” Riley said, “I’d be licking my chops seeing how motivated this cat is right now. It is off the charts.”
