The most dominant world No. 1 golfer since Tiger Woods, Scheffler played in Wednesday morning’s pro-am with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell on a cool, overcast morning.
“I wasn’t going to start hammering him with questions,” Scheffler joked. “He was happy to chat about some stuff, which I found pretty entertaining.
“This might be my first time in Minnesota, I’m not sure,” said Scheffler, who is here with his wife and sons. “I was taken aback with how nice the people have been so far. That’s the one thing I’ve noticed.”
Scheffler’s official Minnesota debut is scheduled to begin at 7:29 a.m. Thursday — just four days after his fourth-place tie as defending champion at the British Open — when he starts Round 1 on the 10th hole alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im.
“I think it’s cool to get the No. 1 player in the world playing in your field,” said defending champion Kurt Kitayama. “You want to play against the best, so it’s great to have [Scheffler] here.”
Scheffler’s appearance will mark only the fifth time a No. 1-ranked men’s golfer has played in Minnesota since the world golf rankings began on April 6, 1986. Scheffler will be trying to become the first of those five to win here.
