If people don't think McCarthy is a good fit in the KOC offense, then why do people keep suggesting Kyler Murray? McCarthy has a much higher ceiling of being a functional pocket passer within the offense than Murray does and I think we can all agree that the only success KOC has ever had is by having a functional pocket passer who can consistently hit on the deep developing patterns he wants to run. That's not Kyler Murray.

JJM got his GM fired?? I suppose there is some connection there, some truth to it, but I never connected the dots as such.

One thing for certain, the QB rumors will be heating up during/after the Combine.

I find it sad/frustrating to be in this situation with the position in 26...Still rooting for the kid to take the reins and run - but I gotta prep myself for any eventuality at this point.

As the NFL offseason rumor mill swirled last week, I wondered what Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy was thinking in the moment.

Of greater importance is this question: What is head coach Kevin O’Connell thinking when it comes to the team’s QB position?

It can be hard to differentiate between speculation and information this time of year, but there has been a preponderance of talk about how the Vikings will add competition to their QB room. O’Connell said as much in his end-of-year-session with local media more than a month ago.

That smoke figures to intensify even more next week when the NFL scouting combine begins. Yes, it’s ostensibly a place for talent evaluators to get a look at draft-eligible players. But it’s also a place for teams and agents to have conversations.

What those conversations might look like is something La Velle E. Neal III and I talked about on Thursday’s Daily Delivery podcast.

Here are some of the latest rumblings:

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer provided some Kyler Murray-to-Minnesota fuel earlier this week on an appearance with Colin Cowherd. He said Murray’s contract “probably makes it more likely” the Cardinals end up having to cut Murray instead of trading him. If that was the case, Murray could be a relatively low-cost reclamation project similar to Sam Darnold in 2024. “You know who did a really good job of that in the last couple years? The Minnesota Vikings,” Breer said. Murray’s career has stalled because of injuries and uneven play, but he’s only 28, is a former No. 1 overall pick and made two Pro Bowls in his first three years in the league.

What about a Kirk Cousins reunion? Jason La Canfora brought that to the forefront recently, and he’s not the first person to mention that as a possibility.

Does McCarthy need a change of scenery already? I’d be hard-pressed to imagine the Vikings give up on him, but ESPN’s Aaron Schatz brought up the possibility albeit in couched terms. “This is likely never going to happen, because it would be ridiculous for the Vikings to unload a player who still has first-round upside after 10 starts. However, a fresh start for McCarthy with a different organization might be the best thing for his career.”

What sort of QB makes the most sense for the Vikings? It depends on how the organization (leaning heavily on O’Connell now that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is out as GM) views him. It still seems like a Daniel Jones type is their likeliest option — someone who can win the job and potentially be a long-term solution, as Jones ended up being for Indianapolis last year.

But a lot will depend on the message the Vikings send to prospective QBs, and as always the market will dictate their options. Their actions will ultimately tell the story, and information from the combine could start to give us clarity on that.

JJM should have gotten on the short bus like Rodgers and Love. Learn the system, get confident, grow into your man body. Feels like the Vikings are in QB limbo. Unless...

Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love both drafted in the 1st round and sat for 3 years. JJM should have had a similar path.

That is about the stupidest part of this whole idiocy.  Fresh starts are for guys who have started, struggled and need something new after several years.  Kid hasn't even started yet.  He needs time on the field, consistency in coaching and a quiet off-season.  Not more change.

I know when the season ended Jettas was talking about working with JJM over this off-season...Hope that comes to fruition.

It's early in the offseason, plenty of time for that still.

What continues to amaze me are the choruses of voices using Darnold as the example of KAM's misjudgment, KOC's failure, the Wilfs' lack of control, etc...

...but practically NONE of them note that giving up on the kid -especially after he looked much better, later, as a developing player will do- would put the Vikings right there with the Jets and Carolina (and the Giants, come to think of it) in terms of giving up on the high pick early. The same bobbleheads that roast those teams while singing Sam's praises don't seem to realize that the "fresh start" would mark him as unable to grasp KOC's offense AND mark the Vikings as unable to develop young QB talent.

Both are bad looks, and unnecessary. He needs competition and the team needs insurance...but, the best scenario is that JJM works and bulks up this offseason, and matches his moxie with legit capability and availability.

KOC, JJM, Flores...make a good plan, or you'll be following Kwesi....

lol, these guys are tough to listen to. Lots of opinions out there, especially in the Silly Season where they desperately need content. Somebody is coming in here for the QB room, will be highly interesting to find out who. I just think its going to be tough to bring in someone of any real value to compete for QB1 when there are plenty of other places easier to get to that spot.

I just don't think its going to be Kyler Murray....I'm not sure exactly WHAT offensive scheme he fits. I mean the guy that truly fit was Uncle Sammy, lol.....but he's busy winning Superbowls. The guy that might make most sense is Derek Carr. I preferred him over Bridgewater back in the day.

I don't see KOC gambling his job on JJM.  Murray, Derek Carr, Malik Willis or God help us Kirko/Karen are probably in the mix.  He needs a playoff win to ensure he makes it to year six.  If one of those guys signs in the next couple months I'd expect JJM to be dealt for a bag of peanuts before opening day.

I disagree. KOC was hired to identify & develop the Vikings franchise QB. If JJM is dealt "for a bag of peanuts", that's more likely a fireable offense than the failure to win a playoff game.

I would say Lewis Cine had more to do with getting KAM fired.   Not that one bust per-say,   but is indicative of a roster that reflects a tenure of draft day failures and trades that didnt pan out, forcing even more desperate measures to find competent people.  Young QBs rarely make an immediate impact,  add in injuries and JJMs start is a forgivable situation,  but you dont put that on the GM.  Hes gone because our roster is largely lacking  any quality depth and quality youth,  which is why you have a GM.

Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

Agreed...

No doubt they'll bring in a new QB to compete...But I certainly dont tie that to the release/trade of a QB they drafted in top 10 and is barely 23.

No matter who the Vikings add to their QB room, and no matter if that QB is our starter in 2026 or not, there's virtually no chance the Vikings move on from JJ. It would go against everything we've heard KOC say about teams failing QBs.

Of course. But its on the wish list of some....why, I have zero idea. Some like to watch it burn, I guess.

If they just bring a Carson Wentz type in then yeah, he must have carte blanche from the Wilfs.  Do whatever, you've got the job regardless of it keeps going sideways at QB.

But I don't think they have given him that.  I think they expect a playoff win in year 5 of KOC, where they made a big roster spend and were sold high expectations by the hc/gm, and for him like for all of us, self preservation is a much more powerful motivator than some altruistic desire to hopefully develop JJM.  He didn't wrest g.m. power away from the one guy who could insist that he stay the course with JJM because he wants to be stuck in that box.

Whoever they bring in at QB in the next couple of months will tell the tale.
