I just don't see him in that stratospheric level of $53mm/year.
I guess that tells me the demands of the position and how difficult it is to find someone to do that particular job.
It also once again demonstrates the value of a rookie QB contract.

I figured he'd be getting Love $$ who averages $55m

Its the mkt today for NFL QB and he was always going to get mkt.

We can argue till the cows come home if he's worth it or not.

He can now afford a modest condo near SF.

Well. we shouldn't have to worry about the 49ers for a decade.

A mid level starter on a top level contract puts a ceiling on a team. Competitive but unlikely to ever win it all.

What would a new Mahomes contract look like these days, it is ridiculous money. Instead of a team cap, I have always thought there should be a position cap, which would have kept salaries from getting out of control.

Purdy's situation is pretty tough. He's not a dominant or flashy QB, but he's obviously a grinder and has proven to be a gamer in ridiculous circumstances.

He's been to the Big Game, took it to overtime, when Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have been watching either with tickets or on the couch.

It's tough to get excited about him, but kinda easy to be impressed by him.

Who's the all-time NFL career leader in QB Passer Rating (minimum 1,000 passing attempts)?

"Ain't he got a Purdy mouth?" Alright, that's a little weird but it's Mr Irrelevant. He has a career passing rating of 104.9, but only 1,069 passing attempts.

The second highest career passer rating is Rodgers, 102.6, with 8,245 passing attempts. Cousins is 97.4, which ranks as 11th, with 5,635 attempts.

Sticky's points are valid, SF had no choice but to take the chance and pay Purdy.

Agree, but like I said before he was extended, I don't think there was ever a debate about this in San Francisco. Of course you sign him. If you don't, you jump back into the craps game and it could be another decade or more before you land one. No one should know this better than the 49ers, who gave up the moon for megabust Trey Lance.

Will it hurt your ability to build a roster around him? OK, sure, a little, but you adjust, get creative. It's not a death sentence. Eagles are entering year 3 of paying Jalen Hurts' massive contract. Chiefs are entering year 6 of paying Mahomes' massive contract. They were the two teams in the Super Bowl, so the idea that it strangles your ability to compete is mostly a myth.

AND I would put Mahomes in a different level when it comes to passing and playmaking vs Hurts...

Mahomes can make those around him better, I dont think thats the case with Jalen. So those two teams won trophies with a bit different skill set at the position.

The 49ers are in an interesting spot. They cut a lot of their talent and are kind of rebuilding at the same time they’re committing to their QB. The Eagles went all in around their QB. Like half his contract hits in the void years. Kind of like opposite strategies. Eagles are going to have a large rebuild to do in ~2029. 49ers will took some of that on now, and will probably have less future rebuilding, but they’re wasting some of his prime contract window. Either way, I trust the 49ers are a good team and will be competitive most years. I think the Eagles strategy is way more solid. 49ers strategy feels like what we got out of the Saints, where they had a prime window that expired and now are in some weird half-committed strategy. Including Mahomes in the conversation is silly. Mahomes is a generational player. How much Mahomes costs almost doesn’t matter. How much Purdy and Hurts cost absolutely matter.

One thing that is interesting about the Eagles and the Chiefs is the benefits you get from committing to a guy for a long time. When you commit to a guy for a long time, you get more years of them cheaper. That said, I think the real problem with committing to a mid guy is that you’re stuck with a mid QB and mid QBs are dramatically less likely to take you to a SB victory.

Purdys team was STACKED when he made a run to the SB.  Now they have lost a lot of that talent and what's left has gotten old.   This is a bad contract for a mid grade QB.

There's worse ways to stack a team than to have a QB that played against KC to overtime in the 'Bowl.

Whether his monster deal financially damages them or not, he's proven that he'll put in the work to get better. Like I said, I'm not amazed or anything by him, but he's not going to be a liability to that team. Much of what's ahead will depend on their front office and coaches.
