The common misconception about J.J. McCarthy coming out of Michigan is that he was a checkdown merchant—that was never the case. In this small sample, @ChaseDaniel does a great job breaking down the arm talent McCarthy possesses.

He was too good to keep off the field, and while his predecessor was a good decision-maker, he didn’t have the arm talent McCarthy possesses. Jim Harbaugh knew McCarthy was the guy to take Michigan to the next level.

The only thing missing from his college tape is volume. He makes all the throws. Has all the skills. Has all the traits. But you never see the 34-43 for 495 yards and 4 touchdowns. He wasn’t asked to do that. I’m fine with that because if he had he would’ve been gone sooner.

This is one of the things I liked most about McCarthy as a draft pick. The unknown. Like Diggs at Maryland, his talent was hidden within a team not able to showcase it. JJ has a very strong arm and weapon-level speed and athleticism--all of which were hidden within a run-and-play-defense team. It's shocking how many just assumed he didn't have those physical skills because of the offense he played in. If he had played at LSU would he have been Joe Burrow? I think it's very possible. Anyway, answering those questions are how you get a talent like Diggs in the 5th round....and maybe why a QB like McCarthy goes after 4 other QBs are taken.
