Meh...they had a contract offer for Kirk Cousins too before he hit the open market and got much more than the Vikings were offering. I see the same sorta thing happening with Darnold. The narrative could be "Hey, the coach of the year and well-known QB whisperer wants Darnold back. All you horrible teams without a QB should probably want him a little more than you're indicating."

Probably. Honestly, I didn’t think it would get that far. I’m guessing two years for a total of $40-45.

I think that's about right...for the Vikings. I just think another team will offer quite a bit more than that. If the Vikings do keep him, which I still think is unlikely, I hope it is a 2-year deal so we can A. keep his cap hit low in '25, and B. get something for him at the end of what should be another good season. Tag and trade wasn't in the cards, but a starting QB of that caliber under contract at a reasonable price is a whole 'nother thing entirely.

I don't get it. Rip off the band-aid and go with JJ. Use the Darnold money on other positions. Sign a solid back qb incase of injury. I'm officially not a fan of competitive rebuilds

Only way I'd be happy with this is a sign/trade....

To me this negatively impacts FA (even it they can backload it) and doesnt set a good-backdrop for JJM to take over.

I agree with MB, probably nothing more than a "meh" and it'll shake out similiar to Kirko.

Look, they probably always had a price that they would keep him at and made the offer.

This might in part be a move to keep the condemnation of the Vikings FO to a minimum too if Sammy goes off and has an All Pro year somewhere.

Not a reason to sign him, but a potential benefit.

If we're in the $20m/per yr range this would be a great signing. We were going to have a $10m backup/camp battle. Why not bring back someone who can run the offense. Having 2 guys who can run our team at the most important position in sports isn't a bad thing.

Offers vary obviously, we'll find out soon. I just don't get this strategy of even making him an offer if true.

The only thing I can think of is protecting themselves with a viable option if McCarthy is further behind in his recovery than expected, but all indications are that's not the case, so I'm right there with you in not seeing the strategy here. I think despite any reports it's a looong shot he ends up back in Minnesota.

Which brings up the point, if Darnold is gone, where does that leave our QB room? I think the preference and the reason for signing Dimes is this very scenario, but if he is also gone, who are we looking at that would be a good fit here and do we add a quarterback in the draft like a Will Howard? I think ideally you'd want McCarthy starting, a veteran backup behind him, and a rookie draft pick marinating as your 3rd.

We have so few draft picks this year, I would cringe a bit spending one on a developmental QB in 25...

How about FA or UDFA for that???
