Ratings Juggernaut Continues
Sunday's AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills drew huge ratings for the NFL and CBS.
According to Puck's John Ourand, the game averaged 57.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched AFC Championship Game since at least 1988.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs outlasted quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, winning the game 32-29 to advance to a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Ourand noted that Chiefs vs. Bills was also the most-watched non-Super Bowl game since the Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints NFC Championship Game during the 2009 season.
Additionally, this year's AFC Championship Game viewership was up 4 percent from last year's game between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.

Right, but would anyone care if it weren't for Taylor Swift?

I was NOT one of those watching.
Love football - "Entertainment" and commercials ...not so much
Do I think that games are "rigged"? Not necessarily, but they are definitely "massaged"
So when the ref with the best view of the play marks it a first down for the Bills and then suddenly the ref from the blindside of the play comes and marks it short, I wonder how they decide where to mark it  It has gotten to the point where KC is unwatchable, the Taylor Swift effect on ratings and merchandise is real and the NFL is riding the train. Will not be contributing to the Super Bowl ratings this year.

Whichever benefits Kansas City. It's in the NFL bylaws....
"The spot of the ball is determined by the point where the ball carrier's forward progress was stopped, and the play is whistled dead. If there is a disagreement between the umpire and the line judge, ball placement will be determined by whichever placement benefits the Kansas City Chiefs."
Regarding the "Taylor Effect"...
...yes, she's the biggest name in pop music (and much of pop culture), but I think the uproar over very occasional 4-7 second moments on camera is pretty overblown.
KOC, JJM, Flores...make a good plan, or you'll be following Kwesi....

It's not having to see her on the screen that is creating an uproar, but the effect of those 4-7 second moments on the NFL and and how that has changed the way Chiefs games are managed by the refs.
Taylor Swift's impact on the NFL is significant, particularly in terms of audience engagement, merchandise sales, and viewership. The so-called "Taylor Swift Effect" has notably boosted the NFL's appeal, especially among demographics not traditionally associated with football.
With Swift's assistance, the NFL attained its highest regular-season female viewership since it started collecting that data in 2000. The NFL's viewership experienced a 53% spike among teenage girls, a 24% increase among women aged 18-24, and a 34% rise among women aged 35 and above.
According to Apex Marketing, Swift has effectively generated an additional $331.5m in brand value for the Chiefs and NFL.
I don’t watch Chiefs games. I don’t frequently watch Eagles games, but I’m still fatigued with Eagles/Chiefs oversaturation in my media/social media streams. Whether it’s the 4 billion state farm commercials, the Jason and Travis Kelce podcast that we watched once but won’t get out of the algorithm, the spinoff podcast with Jason’s hot but relatable wife, the kelce documentary, all the discussion about Mahomes fake sliding, fake going out of bounds, etc., the constant discussion about refs favoring the chiefs or not favoring the chiefs. I don’t want to see Jason’s face any more. I don’t want to see Travis’s face any more. I don’t want to hear either of their voices.
Yeah, I don't plan on watching the Super Bowl - I have ZERO interest in KC, Philly, Taylor, any Mahomes (infants included) any Kelce, Refs, State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Whatever "Flavor of the month" pop star performs at halftime, etc.
I'd rather do something else for those five hours. Like pull weeds.
I'm sure my family will have it on, but personally IDGAF
I do suffer NFL burn-out by Feb.
But 2 of the 3 (or 4) best teams in the league are playing, one has a chance for an historical 3 peat, its my last fix till August and so that's enough interest for me.

Im seeing a few, what I assume are leaked superbowl commercials, there might be hope yet for the marketing and advertising field.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?
I rarely watch the Super Bowl. But I won a nice chunk of money betting the Vikings win total this year. Maybe I'll put it all in Super Bowl prop bets to make it worth watching.
On a side note: can someone please get rid of the fucking Roman numerals? For the love of God, nobody knows what LIX is. Nobody knows what XLVIII is, what number that translates to, or what year it occurred. Fis it!
Love the SB, hate the matchup. We've gotten some classic games in recent years and this will probably be another fun one.

I agree it should be. The problem is with the Chiefs, you need to beat them by 2 scores if you expect to win. You can't go into the final 5-8 minutes down or up only one score. The Chiefs will win most, if not 9/10 of those games. They are just too good, and Mahomes just has that in him. Mahomes will walk down the field at will when the game is on the line or to go up in the final minutes, and most teams can't do anything about it. Mahomes sees the field like I have never seen a QB do. He has the field awareness of Brady but can also run at will if he needs to. That virtually makes it impossible for a team to stop during the 4 minute or hurry up 2 minute offense when it comes to winning the game.
Every game has a call or two that doesn't go their way. It is just highlighted due to them consistently winning.

All of the reasons you mentioned, plus they have a coaching advantage in every game they play. Sometimes a huge one. They're a machine.
Only reason I have to watch a Chiefs game is HOPING someone knocks Mahomes head off.
If you're going to draw a 15 yard PF for breathing on him, you might as well take a couple more steps and really pop his @$$.....
Early......Then again..... No one has got in his head yet, so if he's going to flop anyway, just clean his clock.

That is an irrational way to think about it.
While I certainly wouldn’t agree with watching Mahomes get injured as being the only reason to watch the SB, and I wouldn’t advocate for intentionally trying to injure a player, if a defender is ever waffling on whether or not to hit Mahomes, the most rational choice is to definitely hit him. “Being the more physical team” is definitely a time honored strategy for trying to win games.
If you're going to draw the penalty ANYWAY for NOT hitting him - then hit him.
Do it early in the game & get in his head. If the refs are going to protect him regardless - I say make it count.
