Re-sign Daniel Jones for 1-yr 10 million and have him and JJ McCarthy compete next year.

Darnold can make some spectacular plays against zone coverage, but he is a "need to see it open" QB.  Tight man coverage makes him hold the ball and take unnecessary sacks.  Biggest difference tonight is Stafford was getting the ball out on the face of the rush.  Darnold just holds it and takes sacks.

Get the comp pick and let's roll with our future.

Breaking

Pelissero thinks Darnold will be back in MN next season. Said it in an interview with Meathead on the Fan.

I don't think so. I believe them 100% Of course that is what the organization is going to say!!!!! If you say they dont want them back, the Vikings lose any leverage if they wanted to move him. It is not good business to come out and say, we don't want Sam back. We will let him walk. I mean seriously.

Makes sense for the team to put it out there that they want to keep him, driving up the price only increases the odds of decent comp pick, or trade compensation if they were to go the tag and trade route.

Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

Seems to me, the team would be wise to attempt to sign him to a reasonable short term contract and start the season and see how things roll. He was one the best QB's in the league until the last two games. Next year you have little to lose because JJM is there to take over when Darnold can no longer control his emotions!

I agree he was under siege that final 2 games when the O-line failed, but the great QB's still find a way to hit those open receivers, and he had some of the best receivers in football, and he failed miserably.

But I think Darnold will get offered way too much money by some QB needy team, and The Vikings front office is smart enough to not fall in the trap of overpaying him. I sure hope so anyway. They had to learn something from Cousins, right?

I don't think signing Darnold to a massive deal is anywhere close to what they are thinking. I believe they want teams to call on Darnold and sniff around about us franchising him and what are we looking for in compensation. That is what I feel their exact thought process is.

Can any of you stat geeks find "off target passes" or some such stat that keeps track of poorly thrown passes,  even if they are caught?

I know I started to see signs of SD cracking well before the last 2 weeks,  i am curious to see if his numbers started to trend upward once the national media started to take notice and the games took on more meaning.

Perhaps if that's the case a sports psychiatrist would be able to help him?  I know its easy to say its the OL,  or it was the play calling,  or the receivers werent open,  but I think its largely that Sam just plain stsrted to play with a ratcheted up sphincter and stopped just letting it fly like he was doing the first 6 to 8 weeks or so.

Among qb's with 400 or more dropbacks in 2024 Darnold had the 2nd highest turnover-worthy play rate per PFF.   Numero uno?  Kirk, who ultimately got benched.  The difference, imho, was luck.  Sam found Case Keenum's horseshoe and he didn't lose it until week 18.

I noticed this early on, he would make throws into coverage and in spots that just made me go "oh shit!" and then it would turn out ok.  I haven't seen that since Case was leading the 2017 campaign.  It happens sometimes, and it's great until the luck runs out.

That supports what I was seeing,  but I would like to see if there are game by game stats.

I think we need context most of us don’t have.

Yeah Sammie threw it into coverage, but when your throws are mostly daggers 15-20 yards downfield coverage is gonna have time to react.

If Sammie had a little better head clock and pocket feel, he’d be MVP level. Can he get there?

Sammie had a great year, let’s be real. He is going to get multi year offers at 25-30 and 1 year deals 30-35.

Wouldn’t bother me a bit if they re-signed him 3/75, but I would worry if the money isn’t better well spent if we just move on to JJM now.

You and I, I believe it was you, kinda got blasted for saying this over the season. A lot of times we are lucky to have such good WRs, because I feel without them, it would have been worse. I said, let's wait until the real chips start to be put in play before we crown anyone. Unfortunately, it ended the way I figured it would.
