Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since suffering a turf toe injury against the Jets about a month ago.

Cashman, who was the Vikings’ leading tackler through five games, had his practice reps limited during his first action with the team. Coach Kevin O’Connell said he hopes Cashman can ramp up his participation in preparation for returning to play Sunday at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Blake’s really confident and just absolutely dying to get back out there with the guys,” O’Connell said Wednesday. “Hopefully it’s this week, and we’ll see how he handles the workload.”

Cashman coming back would be huge, makes the entire defense consistently better.

Turf toe is a sprain of the ligaments and capsule in the big toe's metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. It's often caused by forcefully hyperextending the big toe, which can happen during many sports, especially those that involve frequent toe-offs, sudden direction changes, or physical contact.

Symptoms of turf toe include:
Pain on the bottom of the foot
Pain when lifting the big toe, standing on tiptoes, or pushing off

Risk factors for turf toe include:
Previous toe injuries
Arthritis of the big toe
Long first toe, flat feet, or other bony issues
Wearing shoes that are too flexible or tight at the toe box

To diagnose turf toe, a doctor will perform a physical exam and may order imaging scans. Treatment options include:
Resting and avoiding putting weight on the foot
Icing and elevating the foot
Taking over-the-counter pain medication
Physical therapy to improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles that support the MTP joint
Taping the big toe to the smaller toes to restrict motion
Wearing special shoe inserts or a particular type of shoe
Surgery to repair severe tears, fractures, or joint damage

Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury:
Grade 1: Usually heals in a few days to a week
Grade 2: Usually heals in a few weeks
Grade 3: Can take months to heal, and may require a cast for 6 or more weeks

Vikings linebackers Blake Cashman and Ivan Pace Jr. are listed as questionable to play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but both defenders were full participants during Friday’s practice.

Cashman was the team’s leading tackler when he suffered a turf toe injury in the Oct. 6 win against the Jets. He has missed the past three games, but said Thursday he was “feeling great” after practice and was on track to play. Coach Kevin O’Connell said the team needs to see how his big toe responds to his first full practice on Friday.

“Today was part of it and now we’ll see how he responds and how he feels tomorrow,” O’Connell said Friday. “He got some good work in yesterday, a little more today to get back to his full normal Friday workload. We’ll see how he feels coming off that and if we could have him for Sunday that would be a huge bonus.”

O’Connell said Pace played 52 of 54 snaps through a knee injury during last Sunday’s win against the Colts. But he talked like his defense was expecting to have both starting inside linebackers for the first time since Week 5.

“To get Blake and IP back in there together is a force in our base defense,” O’Connell said.

“Cash’s off the wall coverage ability, his speed, his bursts,” the coach added. “He’s really, really instinctual in zone coverage. So, when you’re looking at things that may have caused our defense some conversation over the past few weeks, I think Blake Cashman’s a big part of the consistency factor in how we want to play. It’s a big thing that I’ve been looking forward to clearly for a while and I just want to credit him for the work he’s put in to get back.”

IMO It was noticeable when he was out, and man, it was noticeable he returned today.

Had he played versus the Lions, I think the Vikings would've won.

The face mask penalty was unfortunate, it happens. He's a really solid football player.

5 tackles, 1 sack 2 TFL, 2 QB hits.
