JJM Held Out of Practice
Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy sidelined by right knee soreness, coach Kevin O’Connell says
Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s progress might be paused for at least a little while after he emerged from Saturday’s preseason win over the Raiders with right knee soreness, head coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday evening.
Whether McCarthy, the first-round pick out of Michigan, can travel with the team on Tuesday to Cleveland for joint practices and Saturday’s preseason game remains to be seen. He did not participate in Monday night’s practice at TCO Stadium in Eagan.
“Out of precaution we’re going to continue an evaluation on him and get some more testing done,” O’Connell said. “Very important player, obviously, so want to make sure we’re smart about it before he participates. Making sure we have a good understanding of where he’s at.”
O’Connell said McCarthy “could have continued playing” in Saturday’s exhibition when he was pulled in the middle of the third quarter. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Players reported to TCO Performance Center later than normal on Monday with a night practice scheduled, so O’Connell said the team got a “late start” on diagnosing McCarthy’s issue.
“We’re trying to figure out maybe when it happened,” O’Connell said, “but he just came in with some kind of routine soreness that a lot of guys after their first preseason game sometimes come in with and it was something we wanted to be smart about.”
O’Connell was asked whether there’s any reason to believe McCarthy’s injury is more than “routine” soreness. “At this point, I really don’t,” he said.
McCarthy was going to get “a lot of work” in what is a big week for the team’s preparation. They’ll hold their only set of joint practices this summer on Wednesday and Thursday in Cleveland, followed by the second preseason game against the Browns on Saturday.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
This is why we can’t have nice things.
It's not like he is going to play much more this season anyway. Maybe we see him after game 11 or something

Wouldn't surprise me if they kept him home this week...Just out of abundance of caution.

Its more about how long it sets back his development if he's out for a bit. Sucks. KOC didn't seem concerned, but the media is kind of running with it.
Anything re: JJM is going to be all over the media. I am surprised how high the hype meter is already.
HOPEFULLY, this is not a big deal. We'll know soon if he made it out to Cleveland or not.

For sure. And after Bradford and Teddy, it's hard to blame anyone for being scared here. Seems like QBs all over the league get a knee injury and are ripe as rain the following year. Vikings QBs? Career killer smh.

I'm not with you at all on this take. I think the narrative has been changing as he's developed on a progressed timeline. The real criteria is when he's ready to take the reins and help the team get to that next level. That well could be very early in the season given his progression to date. I think your take has become outdated over the last few weeks, in a good way.

That's exactly it. My first reaction was this is nothing, not even worth responding to. Happens every week. If he's the starter in the regular season, it wouldn't even show up on the injury report.
But Vikings fans have earned every bit of their PTSD on injuries and I don't blame anyone for being a little nervous.

I don’t really see this as a big deal until they say it’s a big deal. Just not going to do anything stupid and push the issue until they can get him put through an MRI machine or get an X-Ray and know there’s no risk.
I would also argue that the more cautious they are the more likely it is he’ll be starting sooner than later. If they were hellbent on holding him out all season, I think they’d be more interested in getting him preseason work, whereas if he was on track for starting week 1, they’d probably be extra careful with the knee.
I didn't see anything unusual that happened in the game. He didn't get sacked, that I recall, so you have to wonder what happened to cause this. If it's on his plant leg this could linger after every game he sees action in.

Poor Sam Darnold. I've been reading the fan practice last night was subdued and quiet because everyone wanted to see McCarthy and were worried about his knee, lol.Viking Nation is all about JJM.
I think for 10 million dollars, he's fine being Mr. Right Now and not Mr. Right

Yeah, really sucks. Relieved it's not an ACL, but this is going to set back his development quite a bit.
AGR is right, we cant have nice things...30 snaps and bam
This will certainly back-burner any talk of him starting anytime soon.
KOC is right - main thing is to figure out what is medically the problem and correct it. Everything else is just secondary.

Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will need surgery on a tear in his right meniscus, coach Kevin O’Connell said.
McCarthy played 30 snaps in the Vikings’ preseason opener against the Raiders, completing 11 of his 18 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while scrambling twice for 18 yards. On Monday, O’Connell said the quarterback reported some right knee soreness lingering after the game; the Vikings decided to hold him out of their night practice on Monday night, and schedule additional testing for Tuesday before determining whether he would go to Cleveland for their joint practices against the Browns.

O’Connell said a timetable for McCarthy’s surgery will be determined in the near future. When he has the surgery, O’Connell said, doctors will determine whether McCarthy will need a full repair or a cleanup that would likely mean a shorter recovery.
”Hopefully we’re having a shorter timeline than a longer timeline,” O’Connell said. “But the most important thing right now is making sure, from a medical standpoint, that we’ve identified the potential severity when we do that procedure.“

Well as Viking fans did we expect anything different. Just let JJ have reps in practice when he heals and sit his ass down for the rest of the season. Look to 2025 to actually make noise in the division with JJ under center. But then of course with our fucking luck he will slip on ice getting into his car in December and tear an ACL.

This will be key: does he travel to Cleveland today.

Kevin O'Connell used the word "routine" to describe the soreness J.J. O'Connell is suffering.
This wasn't in the story, but I asked O'Connell if he had any reason to think this would turn out to be something beyond "routine." He said: "At this point I really don't."
