Not a bad debut for McCarthy, huh? Long way to go yet, no doubt. He'll be a rookie sometimes of course. But a lot of firsts for a rookie QB got accomplished here, won't be as scary moving forward now having a game under your belt at home in the NFL. Threw an icky INT and then 2 beautiful TDs. Tough in the pocket, eyes looking downfield. Converting on 3rd and 4th downs. You can see his speed if he needs to run. Can take a hit. You see how his teammates love him. Throws a beautiful ball.

Minnesota Vikings 24, Las Vegas Raiders 23
Vikings: Look out. The J.J. McCarthy hype meter is about to go into overdrive.
In his professional debut, the Vikings' rookie quarterback threw a pair of long third-quarter touchdown passes -- one of 45 yards to Trishton Jackson in single coverage and another of 33 yards to Trent Sherfield Sr. against a busted coverage. In the public sphere, those scores will surely overshadow the interception he threw to end his first possession as well as a few other shaky passes.
The Vikings approached the game as if veteran Sam Darnold is their likely Week 1 starter, giving him one possession before McCarthy took over. Darnold led the Vikings to the Raiders' 4-yard line before a fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
McCarthy played the next six possessions, completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards while also scrambling twice on third down for 18 yards. In addition to the scores, he also had three other downfield completions of 18 yards or more. It remains to be seen whether the performance will change McCarthy's spot on the Vikings' depth chart, but overall it left a strong first impression.
On the other side of the ball, rookie Dallas Turner played into the second quarter and produced two of the kind of pass rushes the Vikings hoped they would see when they traded up to draft the edge rusher No. 17 overall -- including a key sack. -- Kevin Seifert
"Clearly, everybody can see the arm talent," O'Connell told reporters after the game, per SI.com. "I loved seeing him come right back after the interception and still be aggressive." - NFL.com

The 2 Rookie QB’s who look the most pro-ready thru the first week of preseason games & it’s not really close….
Caleb Williams & JJ McCarthy

He's got the lower half as the platform and that top torso to spin it with torque. Quick release. Wait until he actually learns something! ;) This kid has already been in the pressure cooker. No situation will ever be too big. Sticky isn't right all the time. But he's right about McCarthy (told in Ricky Henderson 3rd person voice).
A month ago I would've said Darnold, Mullens, McCarthy all year, but I now think there will come a time at some point this year (and it could even be in the 1st half of the year) where KOC believes JJM has developed to the point where the spotlight won't severely damage him.

Viking nation has every reason to be excited about the potential of this 21 year old kid. What I keep reminding myself of is even at that tender age, he's been through big, big games, searing lights and press etc...So there is experience there, just not NFL experience. I read a local piece and agree with it; Darnold is the starter and he looked the part. The only question for the Vikings is do they have JJM b4 or after Mullens on the depth chart for 2024?

You see where I'm going? Small time programs and no forge by the fire. They need time. JJ McCarthy? Michigan national champs: played Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Alabama and Washington, beat them all and were national champions. JJM needs time.....but maybe not as much time as planned for. He's WAY more physically talented as a passer than any Michigan QB in decades. He was a 5 star QB in high school. Michigan doesn't get those at QB. Ohio State pissed off JJM and he went to Michigan. JJM had committed to Ohio State, they promised not to recruit another QB and they did with Kyle McCord. JJ said you are dead to me and I will bury you. And he did. I want the Vikings to be cautious as well. And they will be. But if you think KOC isn't losing his shit behind closed doors over McCarthy right now, I'd say that's inaccurate. If he's not the starter by the beginning of November, I'll be shocked. And he'll be ready. His accuracy and pocket presence has blown me away. I didn't expect that yet.
I've always loved McCarthy as a prospect. I'm just very cautious and want to be extra careful with rookie QBs. I admire what the Packers and Chiefs did with their franchise QBs. I think every team should try to follow that model. See, I don't care if we had drafted Caleb, Daniels, Penix, Nix, McCarthy or even CJ Stroud, I'd be banging the same drum. Don't throw him into the fire before he's ready. And remember, this is just about JJM being QB2 not QB1.

Step back from the ledge sticky. It was one game. I’d show you on the doll where the Vikings have hurt me but it’s not appropriate for the internet I want to believe and I’m cautiously optimistic. But it’s one game and it was the Raiders in preseason mode.
MAD GAINZ wrote:Its hard to watch him play Saturday and not see a NFL QB. The play he took the big hit on was pretty impressive: completed for a first down, didn't flinch, starred downfield the whole time and then that quick release. Gold.
I'm with Sticky, I think this kid is special and he was my #1 draft target for us when Kirk went down with the Achilles. Nothing changed as the college season rolled along and we got into the off-season, combine, and lead up to the draft. I still think we should be cautious with him this year. I hope he doesn't NEED to start. I think he could learn a lot sitting most of his rookie year... especially if Darnold plays well and has the team in the playoff hunt. You get to see another QB make plays, make mistakes, and be a part of the coaching discussion that goes on in-game. We'll see how he does in the rest of preseason, but we saw a lot of what makes this kid special against the Raiders. The arm, the athleticism, the poise, the ability to bounce back from a mistake and continue to attack. He didn't turtle after that interception. He played even better. THAT should tell you right there what he's made of... Whenever he starts, I don't think he'll give up the job.

MaroonBells wrote:No doubt you make complete sense here. Completely logical. Its just one game and I expect him to have some rough patches this week in practices against Cleveland and then in the game. Would probably be for the best to learn from. https://x.com/TPPSkol/status/1822980556864299502 The Purple Persuasion @TPPSkol #Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy “will likely take more snaps with the No. 1 unit this week and in the coming weeks”, per @Alec_Lewis
The Purple Persuasion @TPPSkol According to @AlbertBreer , #Raiders coaches and players thought #Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy “played really well against them” last Saturday. Specifically, “his athleticism and decisiveness stood out.”
I think we just need to take a breath here. Just like you and others, I'm over the moon with how McCarthy played on Saturday. It's looking more and more like we have our QB for the next decade. And that's enough for me right now. I still want us to be careful with him and make sure he's fully developed before throwing him to the wolves. See, this is how it starts. A handful of seductive preseason performances and everyone's brain gets sucked out. This is how the hands get dirty to begin with. I don't want to post all of them here because I don't want to kill everyone's buzz, but I started to look into a few preseason performances by QBs who've failed in the past. It's a depressing exersize and it makes you wonder WTF happened. Here's one... https://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/400951835/broncos-bears
