"Why was #Vikings QB JJ McCarthy the QB I felt most confident projecting success to in the 23' #NFLDraft?
He was a QB mature enough @ 20 to be trusted to operate a pro-style scheme w/ full autonomy to override protections & play calls alike
Called plays like an NFL QB too."

“I love his attitude. He is always asking questions, because he wants to learn how to be come a top quarterback and a problem in this league. I’m looking forward to what he has to bring to our team.”

“The kids only had success in his life… tough kid, makes all the throws and still young… if I had a choice last year in the draft for where I wanted it to go it would’ve been the Minnesota Vikings. I think J.J. is in a great situation.”

I love everything that I'm hearing, including the criticisms...because I want him to have things to work on while he's riding the pine. If he's twitching because he feels like Darnold's "in his spot", we could have a locker room issue that we don't need.
I want him to have work to do on himself, and to see the results of doing the work, as he watches the veteran players this season. Just once, I want us to raise a young QB right, and I want the QB to be worth the effort.
Oh...GET THE FUGGIN' IOL FIXED.
I'm one of his biggest hype guys, but there's zero doubt he's got things to work on. And he will. He's not perfect or even the most desirable QB candidate or he would have gone higher and not the fifth QB drafted. These are all facts. Another fact is Minnesota probably would have chosen a different QB if they operated in a vacuum. But they don't. As I said ad nauseam, contrary to a few here, nobody was moving up into the top 3 picks: Chicago, Washington and New England were locked in. They needed QBs. So the Vikings either could have had Penix or JJM, as they passed on the opportunity with Nix.
That's how it goes in the NFL and its not where you start, its where you finish. JMO, but McCarthy was my favorite, even over Maye and Daniels. But two things: I'm just a dumb ol' fan and I would have gotten behind whomever Minnesota drafted. But since they selected 'my guy', yeah I'm stoked. As a fan, I like thinking about his upside. But he could bust just like any of them. I don't have purple colored glasses with JJM, but I'm going to pump the selection up until proven otherwise.

He won't be a star off his physical traits like some guys can be. He will have to be a Brady/Manning type, better from the neck up than other guys and that's how he succeeds. Hope he can pull it off.
??? Are you sure you are thinking of the right player? This isn't accurate at all.
I see that Zulgad is reporting the Vikings liked Penix over JJM.....not sure, but that's what my little birdie told me before the Draft if anyone remembers me saying that. Or more to the point, they liked Penix. More than JJM? I'm not sure about.....
Oh the sowing of the seeds of dissatisfaction in the fanbase by the media!
One thing that can't be denied, and I said it before he was drafted; he makes an impression on people once he meets them:

Does anyone have any evidence one way or another on what KOC or KAM thinks about redshirting JJM or is everyone just giving their gut feel on the matter?
The only 'evidence' we have is KOC saying he's got a plan for JJM and the team will be sticking to this development plan regardless. There are milestones in this plan that JJM will have to hit for the organization to move forward with him as the starter. The insinuation is that will take time....but that's subjective. Its not really anyone on the board this is giving their gut feeling, its more just reposting opinions from the sports media and speculation online.
This 'redshirting' quote is the media being the media. I'm certain KOC nor anyone else in the organization said anything like this. I think Darnold playing well would be a godsend to the long-term success of McCarthy....at least for a substantial part of the season. Nightmare scenario is Sam looking like hot dog shit right out of the gate.
Rumors continue to get out that JJM is impressing people. Fingers crossed.

Speaking this morning on the @PowerTripKFAN, #Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell said there WILL BE “competition” between QBs Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy ?
RS_Express wrote:
They tanked the season in March when they signed Darnold instead of going after Jacoby Brissett (you know, an actual competent bridge qb)
Nah. Jacoby Brissett?? lol. C'mon now. He'll be 32 years old toward the end of this season I believe the thinking was why not have a potential reclamation project with Darnold that, although the odds are extremely low, he may improve nicely with a nice offensive set up, compared to a dude that is what exactly? Just another placeholder for a highly drafted QB.
Let's look at the stats of Brissett vs. Darnold this year.
Edit: whatever video it was that I wanted to post, I have no idea now what it was!
McCarthy held a presser yesterday, its obvious how much he's loving the Viking's organization. He's getting more and more comfortable, even mentioning that Wes Phillips has great hair, lol. Said he feels like he's been in Minnesota for a year already.
MAD GAINZ wrote:
McCarthy was cooking in the red zone period. He went 4 for 5 in that setting, with touchdown passes to Nailor, Lucky Jackson, and Trey Knox. The fourth completion was a dump-off to Kene Nwangwu that may or may not have resulted in a score if tackling were in play. The lone incompletion was a ball that was too hot and a bit too high for Sammis Reyes. Overall, McCarthy looked smooth, decisive, and accurate during the red zone work.

When the Vikings went back to 11-on-11 work, McCarthy had a rookie moment when he was late trying to fit a ball into a tight window with two defenders in the area. Theo Jackson seemed to read it all the way and jumped the route for a pick.
Both Darnold and McCarthy have had their good moments and their bad ones as they've tried to deal with the relentless pressure and complex coverage looks that Brian Flores presents to them. But if you're declaring a winner of each day, Darnold took Day 1 and McCarthy gets each of the last two.
I like reading this about both our QBs.
BOOM
McCarthy will learn. He will get better. If Minnesota can stick to keeping him off the field for most of this year, I think the team will have its answer at the position.

I love hearing McCarthy is doing well. Inject that shit right into my veins. But it also makes me nervous. This is how it starts. At some point, Darnold will have a day like yesterday and the JJ chants will start. Despite the fact that it took Cousins 6 months before he fully grasped this offense, fans are going to believe JJ's ready to run it now because of some good throws in training camp.
I don't THINK O'Connell will be stupid enough to listen to them, but he's got to be patient, like the Chiefs were with Mahomes, like the Packers were with Love.
Makes me a bit nervous, too. Please, please do not shit the bed too early or hard, Sam. JJM is coming....its inevitable. Its what he's always done. But not before Week 9 or 10. Preferably longer.

#Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy is coming for that QB1 spot. He’s hungry for more ?
Per J.J. McCarthy via
@SeifertESPN
, he wants to go “against the 1s” and hit “some deep balls down the field on them to piss them off a little bit”.
Zero doubt the hype train is going strong, and that's everywhere. 7 on 7s are really nothing. Its also important for JJM to go through adversity to correct and improve, which I'm sure we'll see him struggle. I don't think I've ever seen more click-generated hype on Twitter as I'm seeing this year. Every throw is being 'evaluated' by 26 year olds in their parent's basements and put out for consumption. Any veteran reporters left take a more measured approach and get lit up online as being 'negative' by younger fans.
Fact: we really don't know anything yet about JJM. But its always nice to hear positive things regardless. Just have to take everything with a grain of salt, both good or bad, until he's playing in live, regular season games. And even then we'll need patience to see what he'll really be.
