But not only did this team not look like a Super Bowl contender, it didn’t even look like a playoff team today

The truth of the matter is, if this continues, this is the beginning of the end.

The Vikings have no real defined future on offense beyond this season. No QB, no RBs, likely no starting TE, half of an offensive line, Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson. And it’s hard to imagine Jettas is going to stick around for what’s to come.

The idea that we hitched a “Super Bowl" roster to Kyler Murray is laughable. Compounded by the fact they traded away a young QB to make Kyler feel better. This all feels like a house of cards.

I’ve often thought KOC was pretty much untouchable, but if Teasley really wanted to start fresh with a coaching staff and bunch of draft picks he could do it next year by unloading JJ and Addison and build from the ground up.

Pretty insane to think this could be the near future for a 6-1 team, but I think the only thing that saves KOC’s job is a playoff win.

This. I just love to read all of these down-low excuses for Murray, lol. None of this crap was offered to McCarthy last year....none. Yet McCarthy has had the best 6 quarters of his career just 27 days after being on a new team. KOC made his bed with Murray and he fucked up. Bottom line.

Whatever happened behind the scenes, it really can’t be worse than what’s happening in front of them.

You are much nicer than me. I’d have fired Teasley for that trade alone. Why? It’s not because JJM is amazing or necessarily going to be. No one knows since he’s only had like 10 games of experience and even Hall of Fame QB’s usually need 30+ games to start to get consistent. It’s because he was on the roster for the price of a backup and playing with two other QB’s who are often injured. Just from that standpoint alone, no 5th round pick is worth putting yourself in that position. It really was an asinine move no matter what. The Giants must have pinched themselves when Teasley asked for a 5th. It was a no brainer for a throwaway pick like that.

If anyone would have told me I’d want to see the new GM fired within his first months, I’d have thought it impossible. This is because I couldn’t fathom anyone would be stupid enough to make such an illogical decision.

Unless a change is made to the QB position immediately, this season will go downhill fast. No defense can deal with such a lopsided time of possession and sustain elite form. It’s asking far too much of them.

at what point this season did they look playoff worthy.

they barely beat scrubs. i think their best game was against the bears in the rain. GB torched them until GB self destructed and was aided by tthe refs.

if the schedule was in any other random order you would be looking at a 1-6 or 2-5 team.

Yeah, he might. Ive said he's got to stack some good games before anyone thinks Minnesota made a huge mistake. But you can say in the very short term he's played well and the Giants feel he can take the team to the playoffs.....so there's belief there. We'll find out if its warranted.

No losing the game was the issue.
Jettas had the higher rated QB today

Jettas QB was playing against the 32 ranked defense today who lost 3 dbs, starting safety, and ALL PRO Middle linebacker while the other QB was playing vs the best defense in the league. Big difference

The real head scratcher is...all things considered, how in the h-e-double hockey sticks could anyone with any sort of football acumen be convinced Kyler was the better choice in the sham QB competition? Too much B.S. going on with all of that that had very little to do with football......

Mailbag: Fans React to First Vikings Loss of 2026

Well, it was a fun run while it lasted. The Vikings string of six consecutive victories to open the 2026 season and 11 in a row dating to last December came to a halt Sunday after the clocks moved back an hour and the calendar flipped to November.

Before we get to questions, I do want to mention that Vikings coaches, players and emailers expressed thoughts and prayers for Lions linebacker Jack Campbell, who was injured on the first play of the fourth quarter. He left the field via cart during a somber moment.

Another mediocre, inconsistent offensive performance overall, and a disappointing loss. They seem to underperform on offense consistently. It also seemed like we helped the Lions throughout the game with unforced penalties from both sides of the ball? Below are my 3 Ups and 3 Downs for the game:

UPS

1. Nice job by the defense holding the Lions to a FG on their late second quarter drive. Too bad we didn't challenge their third down conversion off the blocked pass earlier in that drive that was incomplete and would have forced a punt?

2. Vikings fourth quarter TD drive with 2 pointer. Very nice. Not enough though.

3. Defensive play overall except in the late fourth when they ran to seal the game.

DOWNS:

1. Our first drive offensive underperformance is on full display: one good play, a 3-yard run. A bomb incomplete, and a third-and-long incomplete. Two of four plays after the first down went to zero seconds and by my count a full second passed after the play clock reaches zero and should have been called? The missed FG on a normal fourth-down attempt was rushed as well, snapped at 2 seconds? A poor but typical effort all around for our offense.

2. Special teams play was down this week? Gift kickoff return plus illegal formation on us, shanked punt from our goal line, and a missed FG directly caused/impacted by a bleeding play clock. We have to better than this.

3. Defense gives up massive Lions running drive to take the lead at the 4-minute mark in the fourth. I don't think we even forced a second down? The only thing worse than that drive was the low probability sideline bomb to Jordan Addison on third-and-4 when we could have won? Hated the call and hated the strategy.

A disappointing loss on a game we could have won. Our underperforming offense finally caught up with us. Looking forward to Monday Night at home against the Bills already.

Respectfully, Jeff L.

Since I'm unaware of a single word to describe the struggle to build and maintain momentum, I think inconsistent may be the best word to describe Minnesota's offense through seven games.

The Vikings gained 24 on a nicely designed play (protection plan was great on Aidan Hutchinson, there was good pocket movement, and Murray found Ben Yurosek in space for an in-rhythm connection) on the first snap of the game.

Unfortunately, the completion was followed by a gain of 3 and two incompletions, leaving Minnesota to try a 57-yard field goal by Will Reichard that was wide right.

Minnesota only had one longer completion on the day than the throw to Yurosek — a 51-yarder to Addison with 10 minutes remaining that keyed Minnesota's second touchdown of the game.

The defense continued its dominant stretch early, recording three sacks of Jared Goff in the first quarter and a fourth in the second. Minnesota also nabbed the only interception Goff has thrown so far this season, when James Pierre continued his strong debut Vikings season.

The interception thrown by Murray inside the 2-minute warning of the first half occurred one play after he broke free for a 22-yard scamper.

The pick gave the Lions the ball at their 38, and Detroit seemed to slow-play things a bit, especially when compared to Dan Campbell's tendencies over time.

The Lions moved the ball 43 yards during the resulting possession that included a neutral zone infraction on fourth-and-1 at the Detroit 47. I was wondering if the Lions were even going to snap the ball or just take a delay of game and punt.

Instead, the Lions were able to move the ball into range for a 37-yard field goal that immediately followed a 19-yard run by Gibbs. It seemed like Detroit was able to find some answers during that possession for how it wanted to approach the second half.

The Lions essentially were the first team to mitigate the massive impact that Vikings special teams had on the team's first six games. I included that performance by Detroit in my game observations article yesterday.

Very frustrating and confusing game in Detroit! I don't understand why you would pass up a gimme field goal only to give up the ball on downs! And then, late in the fourth quarter, with backups all over on the Lions defense, you don't go for it on fourth down and give the ball back to a Lions offense that has been shredding the Vikings defense with the running game all second half. Please explain.

Ben in Bloomington, Minnesota

And…

Hope the Vikings get back on track next week. K.O. going for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter was a costly mistake. You have the best kicker in the league in Will Reichard and the best defense. You didn't convert on fourth-and-5 and gave momentum back to Detroit at the time. If we kicked the field goal the score would been 12-10 Detroit in the fourth quarter. You're playing in Detroit. As Bud Grant would say, take the points.

Jerome in Belvidere, Illinois (Longtime Vikings Fan)

I'm combining these questions because of the overlap.

I'm not a coach, but I have usually expressed a personal value on scoring points at different parts of games because it extends the game. A field goal at that point would have made it 12-10, and three points there would have made it where Minnesota only needed to get a field goal to reclaim the lead on what became its final possession.

O'Connell was asked about the decision after the game and said the following:

"We got the exact look we wanted on the play. There was a little bit of internal pressure, but we had J.A. versus a 1-on-1 matchup screaming across the field. He'd love to be able to just take a hitch and drive that ball. I think there was some internal pressure that forced him to get that ball out early.

"Talking to Flo' before that, obviously there was a long sequence there while they were tending to Jack on the field. It just felt like it was a moment to be aggressive knowing that I have total trust and confidence in our defense. They got the stop, we got the ball back and got a fourth quarter lead, but tip the cap to them for the way they were able to move it and go down there and get the touchdown and take the lead back."

Dan Campell took some (most would say deserved) heat last week for going on it deep in his own territory and tied against the Packers. Green Bay missed the ensuing FG opportunity, and Detroit did not suffer consequences.

Down four with about three minutes remaining and facing a fourth-and-5 at the Minnesota 33-yard line, I could see a devil's advocate argument of saying go for it because if you are already banking on getting a stop by your defense, then three points there only makes it a seven-point game, so a touchdown could then either tie and force overtime or provide a win or loss, pending the outcome of a 2-point conversion.

Ultimately, Minnesota opted to punt, but the defense was quite worn down, and the Lions offense closed things out.

I'm sure it goes without saying that our offensive struggles have been the bane of this team this season. Every week, our defense does its job of holding the opposing offense to minimal points and yards only to have our offense stagnate. I think the majority of that falls on Kyler Murray, who either is too indecisive or too inaccurate, or both. He does best when he just runs the ball on a QB draw. When will K.O. make the change??

Brian in Montana

And…

I am 74 years old and a lifetime Vikings fan. I haven't seen a defense like this since the '70s. But when is somebody gonna say something about the poor performance of Kyler? He has been doing a few good things, but he continually overthrows touchdown passes and misses the read for open receivers. He cannot continue to hold the ball for five and six seconds and expect not to be sacked. We would be much better with Carson Wentz, or better yet, Max Brosmer at quarterback.

Thank you,

Jerry from Side Lake, Minnesota

Quarterback is a position that will always have significant attention placed on it.

This game personally reminded me a little bit of the home loss to Baltimore last season, with the way the pass vs. run distribution shook out. Minnesota totaled 18 rushes (albeit for 110 yards), and J.J. McCarthy went 20-of-42 passing against the Ravens in Week 10 of 2025 in the start of a rough couple of weeks. Justin Jefferson caught four passes on 12 targets, and Addison caught three on 11 in that contest.

On Sunday, the Vikings rushed 18 times and had 29 pass attempts (and three sacks). Jefferson finished with five catches on nine targets, and Addison had three on eight.

We've seen Murray complete a high number of passes in other games, but Sunday also wasn't the first time there were some he wanted back.

The job by the defense in the first half was quite impressive. Minnesota forced three punts and an interception, despite Detroit starting five of its six possessions beyond its own 35-yard line.

The Vikings will have an extra day this week to try to rectify things before another high-powered attack visits U.S. Bank Stadium.
