Jordan Addison has always been a quality deep threat and touchdown producer. Jauan Jennings is a great dirty-work guy as a big slot who works over the middle and is a killer blocker. Tai Felton and Myles Price round things out.”

Vikings Get Some Honest Words from Packers HC Matt LaFleur https://t.co/XwkSVvoq3a #Vikings #NFL #Skol
— PurplePTSD.com (@purplePTSD) September 7, 2026
The season is finally here, and the Minnesota Vikings kick it off against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, September 13th. Obviously, the current two regimes are very familiar with each other. Kevin O’Connell is entering his fifth season as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and Matt LaFleur is entering his eighth season as head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
The two have coached against each other in their respective roles eight times now, and this Sunday will be their ninth meeting. O’Connell holds the upper hand in their showdowns with a 5-3 record since 2022. Also under O’Connell, the Packers have never swept the Vikings. I guess that’s good for something.
Many Vikings fans were discussing the temperature of Kevin O’Connell’s seat heading into 2026, implying that the head coach could be relieved of his duties if the team has a down year. After all, that would make five seasons without O’Connell winning a playoff game. The same seat is warming up in LaFleur’s own regard, as Green Bay’s playoff success since 2019 isn’t anywhere near the standard it was before LaFleur got there. To be fair, he only had so many years of a peak Aaron Rodgers to work with in his era.
Packers HC Matt LaFleur Talks Vikings DC Brian Flores, Importance of Division Games
Matt LaFleur recently opened up about the Vikings, touching on a couple of topics. He began with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. “You try to get as much information as possible,” began LaFleur. “You watch some of the preseason stuff. I know they’re not showing everything, obviously. We’ve gone against each other quite a lot of times now, and I would tell you this: I think Flores does as good as anybody at creating problems for offenses. It’s a highly aggressive defense, and you kind of, especially Week 1, you’re not really quite sure what’s going to happen, but I’m pretty sure I can bank on it that they’re going to bring a lot of pressure.”
LaFleur also touched on the importance (or lack thereof) of starting the season on the road against a divisional opponent: “I don’t put too much thought into it, to be honest with you. It’s just the next game, and that’s what the schedule makers decide. We just show up and try to get prepared and ready to go out and play our best ball.”
Vikings-Packers Matchup in Week 1 Does Hold Importance
His neutral approach as the opener being “just another game” is understandable, but there’s no doubt there’s a different feeling to a divisional matchup being the kickoff to your season. When there’s only 17 games to make the playoffs, every game matters, and that goes without saying. With the first one being a rivalry, you’re setting a certain tone for the rest of the season, and the importance of your game goes up another level to begin the year.
There’s no doubt that there will be an air of greater importance on September 12th. In Minnesota, it’s a new era under Kyler Murray, and Kevin O’Connell knows that he needs a big season to stick around long-term. Justin Jefferson is also embarking on a revenge tour, and he’s not a big fan of Green Bay. For the Packers, they will be without Micah Parsons and potentially Josh Jacobs as well. Any wins they can pick up without one or more star players is very important.
In what is expected to be a tight NFC North, every win will matter, especially divisional games. It doesn’t matter how early it is.

Early Vikings Week 1 Injury Report (Updates on J.J. McCarthy, Jacob Thomas & More)
The Vikings have a few injuries to monitor heading into the season opener against the Packers.
The Vikings have escaped the preseason relatively healthy. Aside from the season-ending leg injury to Jamal Adams, they have just a few injuries to monitor heading into Week 1's season opener against the rival Packers.
Still, with a few concerns on both sides of the ball, let's assess the health of some key Vikings with less than one week to go before the all-important season-opening clash with the Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium.
J.J. McCarthy, QB (ankle)
J.J. McCarthy suffered an ankle sprain in the Vikings' second preseason game against the Ravens, but was supposedly trending towards suiting up against the Broncos the following week. That never happened, and conflicting reports about how healthy McCarthy actually was muddied the waters further. After the game, head coach Kevin O'Connell said that McCarthy just wasn't ready.
“We hoped to get him turned over,” O’Connell explained (h/t ESPN's Kevin Seifert). “Just couldn’t get him there.”
However, multiple reports emerged in the coming hours and days that it was McCarthy himself who made the call to sit out. The next few days didn't shed much light on the situation either.
Reported to be a "multi-week" injury by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Aug. 31, Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley said that McCarthy had been practicing in full all week on Sept. 2. Trade rumors, of course, continue to swirl, but it seems that McCarthy will be healthy to enough to suit up against Green Bay. Whether that's for the QB2 or QB3 role, though, remains to be seen.
Jacob Thomas, S (ankle)
Undrafted free agent rookie Jacob Thomas was the star of the preseason, notching an interception and grading out as the highest-rated rookie according to Pro Football Focus. However, his final preseason game was cut short after just seven snaps due to what looked like a severe ankle injury.
Vikings fans collectively breathed a sigh of relief when post-game tests revealed the injury to be a Grade 1 ankle sprain, according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis. It looked much worse watching it live, but Grade 1 is the mildest level of sprain, and recovery typically takes just a week or two. Ultimately, Thomas should avoid being placed on injured reserve, but another development in what was becoming a thin safety room means the Vikings won't rush him back.
Harrison Smith's sudden return to the Vikings will allow the team to take it slow with Thomas, and while he'll likely be healthy enough to face the Packers on Sunday, the rookie may not take the field in Week 1. Still, Thomas has a bright future with the team and couldn't have asked for a better player to learn under until his time comes.
Theo Jackson, S (lower body)
Theo Jackson left the joint practices with the Ravens with an apparent lower-body injury and did not return. His injury was never officially disclosed, but O'Connell did mention that the safety was trending in the right direction to be ready for the season opener a little over a week ago.
"Theo Jackson is also progressing in a good way," O'Connell said. "You'll start seeing him a little bit more off to the side... But for sure we're targeting that Packers week."
Jackson figures to get some work behind starters Joshua Metellus, Smith and maybe even Jay Ward. That's, of course, assuming he's healthy. Before the injury, Jackson wasn't exactly balling out, and after losing his job to Jay Ward halfway through 2025, his injury now surely won't help his cause.
If Jackson can't go against the Packers, now-healthy rookie Jakobe Thomas may get a look after missing most of the preseason due to a lingering back injury.
Harrison Smith, S (game shape)
Smith will officially return for his 15th NFL season after signing with the Vikings on Saturday. He's been out of football since January and did not participate in organized team activities or training camp. Still, NFL Network's Mile Garafolo reported that Smith has eyes on playing right away against the Packers.

Packers’ Week 1 Problems Before Vikings Opener
The Minnesota Vikings were always going to face a difficult challenge in their regular-season opener against the rival Green Bay Packers. A Week 1 matchup carries enough pressure on its own; the divisional reality adds even more intrigue.
But the landscape has changed in Minnesota’s favor.
The Packers are already set to enter the Sept. 13 game without their best defensive player and their top running back. Their preferred offensive line has barely worked together, and Green Bay’s coach has made clear that the unit remains unsettled.
That does not make the opener automatic for the Vikings. Jordan Love is still a talented quarterback, and Matt LaFleur is still one of the NFL’s best offensive coaches and has the track record to prove it.
It does mean Green Bay could arrive at U.S. Bank Stadium far from full strength.
Green Bay’s Offensive Line Is Still Unsettled
The Packers want to start Jordan Morgan, Aaron Banks, Sean Rhyan, Jacob Monk and Zach Bako-Bewele (The artist formerly known as Zach Tom) up front.
Whether that group can take the field together in Minnesota remains unclear.
Banks and Bako-Bewele both missed the preseason while working back from knee injuries. And LaFleur did not offer much certainty when he was asked about the group in his Sept. 1 presser.
“I think that’s to be determined,” LaFleur said. “Obviously, we’d like those guys out there. … Obviously, you’d like your starting five out there and I’d say until it’s proven, then I mean, it could be anybody.”
LaFleur later made the implication even clearer: “All things are on the table.”
“Until we consistently see them out there, I mean, you’d be dumb as a coach not to have a contingency plan for that,” he said.
That is not a declaration that either player will miss Week 1. Bako-Bewele has said he intends to play in the opener. But it is a sign that Green Bay has to plan for limited workloads, replacements or lineup changes.
The concern is not simply who starts. It is continuity.
Even if Banks and Bako-Bewele play, there will be understandable questions about how much Green Bay’s front has prepared together for a divisional road opener.
A line that has not had much live work together must open the season on the road against a defense built to force difficult protection decisions. Brian Flores sends blitz after blitz, and even line units that are not sorting through injuries struggle against his units.
Josh Jacobs Cannot Play
Green Bay will also be without its featured running back.
The NFL placed Josh Jacobs on the Commissioner Exempt List on Aug. 30. The league said Jacobs is not permitted to practice or attend games while on the list, which rules him out for Week 1. The NFL’s announcement followed misdemeanor battery and criminal-damage-to-property charges; the legal process remains ongoing.
Without him, more responsibility falls on Love to carry the offense through the air.
That is not an ideal formula against a Vikings defense built to make quarterbacks identify pressure, adjust protections and deliver the ball before they are entirely sure what is coming.
Micah Parsons Will Not Be There
The Packers’ problems are not limited to offense.
Green Bay placed Micah Parsons on reserve/physically unable to perform ahead of the roster deadline, making the All-Pro edge rusher ineligible for the first four games of the season.
That removes the defender who could have most disrupted Minnesota’s offense, and certainly has in the past. Every time he’s on the other side, the Vikings have struggled to keep him away from the quarterback.
Parsons is the type of player who can wreck a game plan by himself. He would have been a major concern for Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill, even with both veteran tackles healthy. Without him, Green Bay loses its best individual source of pressure against Kyler Murray.
An offense breaking in a new starting quarterback has a much better chance to settle in when it does not have to account for Parsons on every snap.
Even LaFleur Knows What Is Coming
LaFleur knows Flores’ defense well. The two coaches have faced each other repeatedly in the NFC North, and Green Bay has spent much of the past month preparing for another aggressive Minnesota unit.
The Packers coach did not sound as though he expects an easy introduction for a potentially unsettled offensive line.
“I think Flores does as good as anybody just creating problems for offenses,” LaFleur said Wednesday. “It’s a highly aggressive defense. … I’m pretty sure that I can bank on it that they’re going to bring a lot of pressure.”
That is a meaningful admission before a Week 1 matchup.
Minnesota can deploy Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner off the edge, then complicate the picture with interior pressure, off-ball linebackers and safeties near the line of scrimmage and disguised coverage behind it. The challenge for Green Bay is not merely blocking one player, but identifying who is actually rushing before the ball is snapped.
A healthy, cohesive offensive line may be able to manage that. A line still working through availability questions faces a much harder task.
An Opportunity, Not an Excuse
The Vikings have their own questions.
They are entering the season with a new starting quarterback, an evolving offensive line and uncertainty along the defensive line and at safety.
Still, the Week 1 landscape has shifted.

Cheese twitter is all excited about Christian Watson now being a WR1. I guess because they say he is? As if saying it makes it true? Because he sure hasn't played like it. Jordan Addison has more catches for more yards and more TDs in 3 years than Watson has in 4. This despite Watson playing with 2 competent QBs and Addison catching passes from...8!
Watson has played 17 games zero times in his career and he's notorious for plays like this.

I see it like this:
We actually pound the rock against this GB mediocre front and ask Murray to get some conversions. Obviously we are going to take intermediate shots with Jettas.
GB will get the ball to the edges quickly and make our secondary tackle
What I don’t expect to see is us in shotgun and passing 60% if that happens, I foresee bad things
