The case for Kyler Murray
Let’s start a thread…..why our new QB1 is going to rock;

As I’ve been saying since my own “Case for Kyler” thread back before we even signed him, this is an addition most Viking fans haven’t completely thought through. Because if they had, they’d be a lot more excited than they are.
Google how Justin Jefferson plays against zone. Google how a running QB forces defenses to play zone more than they want to. Google how an effective outside zone running scheme pairs with a runner of Murray’s caliber. Yes, it does have to be effective but I like how they brought in Frank Smith to do just that.
Teams with this much offensive talent rarely have a QB of this caliber, and vice versa. We’ll only get it for a year—a contract year for Murray (as well as Addison, Mason). After that, Murray either leaves or we pay him big money and will have to make sacrifices elsewhere on the roster. But for one year at least, Jefferson, Addison, Jennings, Hockenson, Darrisaw, O’Neill—this Ferrari of an offense—gets to be driven by Ken Miles. And the results promise to be ridiculous.
The two things that really had me excited was the ROI on the contract and as you mentioned the increased use of zone and the way Jefferson absolutely destroys zone.
At minimum we should force defenses to deploy a spy. Are you spying a guy with that type of speed with a LB? Nope. Should open up the passing game further.

I don't think they can use a spy. I mean, it's tough to justify using a spy when you have to account for 18, 3 and 14. And if that run game starts clicking...oh my.

'It’s pretty hard to do better in the offense than Sam Darnold but if we look at it from the perspective of data, ESPN’s Points Above Average model in 2024 had Kyler ahead of Darnold. His rushing created 27 extra first downs and 19 runs of more than 10 yards in 2024. That’s a lot of chain moving with the legs.
Crazy stat for you about Murray: No quarterback had a faster speed (by NGS tracking) when scrambling past the line of scrimmage than Murray."
"There’s a few things that stand out. Staying out of third-and-long situations is massive with Murray. From his career splits, he has a 113.9 rating on third-and-3 or less, 92.5 rating on third down and between 4-6 yards and then just 76.0 on third down and 10 or more. He has 33 TDs to 6 INTs on short or medium and 8 TD to 11 INT on third-and-long.
How does that compare to the rest of the league? Glad you asked… On third down with 5 or fewer yards to go since 2019, Murray has a 108.5 rating, seventh best among QBs with 200+ passes in those situations and ahead of Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert. On third down with 7+ yards to go, he’s 27th in rating."

It's business and KOC is thinking about his job, the margin for error is basically nonexistent. There are only so many chances you get

It won't take much to produce a better outcome than last year.
Why Kyler moves the needle so much w MIN and why the Vikings are so intriguing. Defense isnt always sticky year to year unless the DC is Brian Flores, of course. But last year the Vikings off generated a 50th percentile+ EPA in just 3 games all year going 3-0 with a +43 pt diff.… pic.twitter.com/nmH2ysDcr8

The case for Kyler was on full display yesterday. JJM should be QB3

That may end up happening. That just means he is forced to continue to learn and develop. It's actually not a bad thing either.

IMO, McCarthy should get the entire first half next week against Baltimore with a portion of the 1's playing. Hell, play him into the 3rd before giving way to Wentz. Let him play and show what he can do...one way or the other. We all want some clarity on the matter and there's no better time
The scrimmages this week (b4 the ps game) are going to be very important to players and the coaches...
Ravens are going to be a good challenge too.
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

I think this week and against the Ravens will prove and show more than anything else in TC.

Yup. this is it - the meat of the pre-season.
We've seen a loosening of the reigns with vets this year, which I think is good in spite of what happened with Adams.
But I think those reigns tighten a lot by game 3...Bubble players, young ones who need reps etc. will get the field time by that point.
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
Meh, I think this roster is 98% done. Only validation of what the coaches think right now is in play. If you're the Vikings, may as well wait for final cutdowns before signing any more players of any potential worth. Camp fodder is still needed so that may be in play yet.

IF that holds true, the Vikings will be facing some big questions at year end re: K1
We're a long, long ways from that reality though.
So let's play the games I guess.
Hopefully we all have an enjoyable season.

1. Kevin O’Connell is playing to his strengthsPerhaps the most reasonable concern about the Murray-Minnesota marriage was the potential mismatch in scheme fits. Murray had taken the majority of his career snaps from the shotgun, while O’Connell tended to have his QBs operate from under center.
So far through camp, though, we are seeing a distinct blend between the two. O’Connell has integrated more shotgun formations and even showcased pistol formations as well in the early stages of camp. Murray’s mobility, combined with a new outside run scheme for his running backs, opens the door to numerous possibilities and variations in formation.
Even when Murray has lined up under center, many of the concerns tossed around in the spring seem overblown so far. He’s very rarely used his legs through camp and has mostly proven capable of stepping up in the pocket and delivering accurate passes, despite pressure in his face.
The most optimistic outlook that should be taken from this is that Murray and O’Connell are approaching the perfect balance between sticking to a playbook with historic success and embracing his quarterback’s truly unique skillset.
This is the one that makes me hopeful. I think last year was as much on KOC as any of his QBs. He was coaching mechanics in the middle of the season and had his QBs head all messed up. Once KOC realized he needed to adjust his offense for a young QB (after the Seattle debacle), I think JJ played better.
If KOC can learn to adjust his offense to the QB he has, not the QB he wants, then our offense can flourish. Oh, and what I saw of the run game against the giants was pretty encouraging as well.

I believe it was Adam Thielen that said, The QB needs to let KO be the star of the offense. Not sure I liked that comment all that much. Puts leadership traits in question with KO in ways. Just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Not sure he is the QB whisperer. He absolutely fails with young QBs that aren't already NFL mentally mature. That speaks volumes on your leadership. You need a VET in order to succeed. KO needs to be checked at some point.

Last summer, you’ll remember, there were big questions surrounding the former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick. He was swimming in a sea of schemes that new head coach Ben Johnson was flooding him with. There were days when the narrative—and maybe even the reality—was that he wasn’t even the best quarterback on the Bears’ roster. As long as those practices were open to the media, he struggled to find his stride and string together even so much as a good week.
And that, as we wound up seeing, was all by design.
This summer, he’s carrying himself with confidence, helping his coaches direct the offense in practice. The ball is coming out fast, and spinning off his hand with the sort of authority that can only happen when a quarterback knows what he’s doing. Here’s something else that Williams knows: Point A and B in this 18-month story, dating back to Johnson’s hire in January 2025, are inextricably and undeniably connected.
“It did everything for me,” Williams said of the humbling process Johnson laid out. “It built more confidence, it built mental fortitude, it built more strength, it built more maturity for me, learning and having to grow and look at myself and figure out what I need to do better.
Hmm, you mean young QBs need time to mature and grow?
Wish Ben Johnson would have listened to the writers and the fans and demoted Caleb to QB3 or traded him.
