The clock is beginning to matter
General manager Nolan Teasley said at night practice that the Vikings built the quarterback room to be competitive. He praised the group for applying the work from meetings and walkthroughs to the practice field.
The preseason will add the next layer of evidence.
O’Connell added that the Vikings will not unveil everything they might use once the regular season begins, but he wants players to experience the next phase: putting on a uniform, facing another NFL team and playing when “the whole world can see it.”
That matters for both quarterbacks, although for different reasons.
Murray needs to demonstrate that the recent errors are a camp fluctuation rather than a warning sign. He does not have to be spectacular in practice or the preseason, but he surely needs to be more consistently accurate, decisive and in control of the offense.
McCarthy needs to show that he can turn flashes into a complete performance. A few beautiful throws will keep the competition alive, but he won’t usurp Murray if he continues to sprinkle in frequent inexplicable misses.
In the meantime, O’Connell has not moved his public timeline.
“Nothing has really changed from a standpoint of the timeline,” he said. “We’ll see how the reps continue to go.”
But he also offered the line that best captures the stakes of the next two weeks.
“We’ve got time, but not that much time.”
The Vikings do not need a perfect answer in August. They need a quarterback who gives a deep, talented roster a stable chance to win games in September.
So far, neither passer has shown enough consistency to earn the fanbase’s confidence.

I wouldn’t make the decision until at least after the second preseason game based on what we are hearing. I don’t subscribe to the idea it’s a must do immediately to name a starter. I don’t find the arguments pushing for it particularly compelling.
If neither one has pulled away, I think you need to keep it going. It's not like if you pick one now, they are suddenly going to start playing better.
If JJ McCarthy is turning a corner here, he deserves the opportunity to keep pushing and have a legit chance to win the job. Same thing for Kyler, if he starts cleaning up his consistency and hitting on some deep throws, then it should be him since he was the odds on favorite due to his prior production and experience.
Eventually we're going to see one of these guys stacking good days. We have some time yet to see it play out.

I don't think the purple public is necessarily going to notice one QB playing better than the other. It's probably not going to be evident in the completion percentage, the TD to INT ratio, whether one QB "won" the day or not. It's going to be in the things we can't see, like which QB is getting the offense out of bad plays and into good ones based on what the defense is showing, which QB is calling the right protections, which QB's tempo and processing speed is quicker, which QB is throwing to the right route at the right time based on what the defense is showing. You can watch every snap in every practice and not really know any of these things.

Coach KO was either too puffed up on hubris or was extremely desperate to have chosen this road for the team.
My preference at the time and today in hindsight, would have been for the Vikings to UPGRADE at QB (Dak, Hurts,...) or stick with our "Franchise Quarterback in this League", JJM. But no open competition. Open QB Competitions in the NFL are rare because they are uncontrollable, lazy, and not worth the squeeze. They also don't end when they "end". Whoever starts the season for us better not start slow or it'll be pitchfork time in MIN-- Especially if Flores has the defense looking strong again.
Starting to think we didn't upgrade the room, we multiplied the problem.

Unless McCarthy had already shown a clear advantage over a former PB/7 year vet? He's not going to start the season at Qb1.
He may get some chances to start at some point, to play, maybe even take over QB1 this year, but not on opening day.
Id rather have the first team offense set and settled no later then after the NYG game.
Start getting timing, rhythm down for GB.

Lots going on here. We hear JJM won this practice and Kyler won this one. We also hear Kyler is pushing the ball down field and JJM is doing more dump off stuff. We will hear JJM is hesitant.. not processing as fast.
Bottom line for this year... When the bullets start flying in this 17 game marathon Kyler is going to win more.
Didn't JJM pull himself out of a game last year? Didn't he have one of the worse statistical season in the NFL last year?
Kyler has the starts, good TD to turnover ration. His legs should be very beneficial. Lets stop screwing around.
