Australia vs USA today, 3:00 pm Eastern. The only time I give the slightest shit about soccer is World Cup and when the USA plays. I'm a 100% fair weather, front runner baby!

What kills me is how it 100% dominates sports talk now for some and they act like its all they follow and do, in a few weeks we wont hear a word about it once again.

100%. They are just catching the wave....especially this year where so many qualifying games are here on U.S. soil around the country. Add that the USA really rolled Paraguay in Game 1 and now you've got soccer fever! 😀 Just keep winning, lol. The U.S. is probably the 9th or 10th best team in the tourney...very LONG odds to win the Cup.

The entire world competes for a chance to even make the tournament. Only 48 countries get in. Its the only sport in the world where countries are actually competing against eachother for a WORLD Title except for the olympics. Its a sport you don't need much $ to get into so its played everywhere. If you've ever travelled to 2nd and 3rd world countries you'll understand. Entire towns and villages are built around soccer fields. Generations gather to play/watch the games together creating solid communities.

Not trying to be a dick but it's pretty much only Americans who can't understand how big this is in every other country. It's a global event that brings the world together vs dividing it. Just look at all the fans of the different countries on social media having their minds blown by how awesome America is and how friendly and welcoming we are to everyone. It's awesome that we are hosting it in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

I'm good with mixing it in as well and wondered if that's what you meant. Question is, when would you incorporate? Defensive stand? I think it has too much dead air when you want to be deafening continuously. Offense series?...nah. Field goal attempts?...no way, unless Will comes out an supports it. Kick offs? I could see this being a great spot for it. Just random during commercial time? Maybe, but you don't get that on tv, so...

I go to a few Bundesliga matches a year, and the fan participation/cheers go on all game long. One thing I have heard a lot is the USA chant is very boring now and gets Eyeroll's. It was great at one time but has become very cliche' over the years.

Defensive stands. The whole crowd would be moving maybe throwing off depth perception? I'm reaching obviously but it would have to be on defensive stands. Or opposing teams field goals could work also. If taking a timeout to freeze the kicker helps then that could also. The clip I sent was 1/10th of the stadium doing it. Imagine the entire US Bank doing that and how loud it would be.

I like the opposing kicker for sure, but I also like on kick offs. I'm down...now get the other 66,199 fans to get on board.

Chanting "U.S.A! U.S.A!" is now cliche? Granted its not as good as the euro soccer chants and the flares, flags and banners but it's straight to the point.

Also we dont have football hooligans so we got that one over Europe. ;)

It is to the rest of the stadium. It's all we've been doing for over 40 years. The hooligans are the associated with the Brits. Have yet to see any large scale violence, certainly nothing like an Eagles game.

so? I am talking about people here in the US where nobody talks about soccer except for when the world cup rolls around and suddenly they all think they are Andres Cantor (yes I had to look it up)... but in a couple weeks they will once again have nothing to say about the game. I tried it for a couple years growning up in the late 70s/early 80s... found it pretty boring and never kept any interest after that.

I understand its global significance and with the large influx of Hispanics into the US, its growing participation levels, but IMO its still about as exciting to watch as.... well I cant really think of anything I would be less likely to tune into than soccer, the flopping makes lebron envious, and the lack of scoring makes it hard to sit through for the average sports fan. I can see the chess matches and appreciate some of the nuance, but that only goes so far.

not trying to shit on the game, its cool that you seem to be into it. I just laugh at the posers that only speak up when its the world cup or olympics.

Well, if you're watching the USA/Australia game, you would have heard a variation of the USA chant that has become "cliche", that was a little progressive leading like our Skol chant. U.........S........A....... as it progressively gains speed to USA! I liked hearing it. I also never get sick of hearing it. It gives me chills at times.

But if you ever think a USA chant is an eyeroll, I think it's time to leave. It's getting boring? Pulease, that is the saddest thing I have read in here for a while. Have a little pride in your country.

OK, easy now. I dont think it was in reference to lack of pride, more like its gotten stale in terms of creativity in relation to some of the other countries that are newer to the robust patriotism arena.

Sorry to offend, I was referring to cheers at sporting events, not attacking our beloved homeland country.

Soccer is by far the most popular sport in the world. Its worldwide fan base is 10 times that of the NFL.

futbol @ 5 billion fans to football at 400 million fans ( but gaining, right Rog?) yeah I dont think anybody is confused on what the preferred global athletic competition is.

however in the the good ol US of A... Football is still the king with a 4 to 1 advantage over Soccer. ( it supposedly has overtaken baseball as the #3 most popular sport, with basketball holding the #2 spot) I kind of doubt that is based on game attendance or tv viewers, but it was what AI came back with.

all I know is that our area has gone all in on a new JR hockey league team the last couple years, no talk about soccer or futbol at all.
