2 Punters No problem
Since Brett Thorson arrived from Australia, the Vikings get a kangaroo clause. They can park him on the practice squad, and other teams aren't allowed to hop in and snatch him away.
Veteran Hekker wins the job, the Vikings hide the Aussie on the practice squad, and Kevin O'Connell starts drawing up punt passes.
This sounds like a win win

Wrong. Another team can sign him to 53 if they choose.

The the internet said he is protected even if on the practice squad.. so you are basically arguing with the internet. Which is undefeated.

we had a punter that was an exQB the last 4 years and he threw 1 pass...
Hekker has 26 career pass attempts. So just maybe

Pfff, please. You're assuming we're ever punting when Nein gets going this fall.

You're both kinda right... If the Vikings designated him with an "IPP exemption" if he's moved to the practice squad, then no other NFL teams can pluck him from our practice squad. If they don't use that and he goes to the practice squad, any team can add him to their roster.

Whether our Aussie P ever plays on Sundays or not, this is the kind of savvy move I like to see the Vikings making. Get him on the PS for a year and go from there. Low/no risk, decent upside. Getting a comp pick for a month of Daniel Jones was another nice move the Vikes pulled. KAM, Teasley, a random assistant, whoever it may be... there are definitely some smart people working for the Vikings. And that's always encouraging.
Word on the street is Thorson is doing very well holding for The Thrill. He keeps that up, the dude could find himself the punter in 2027 as they'll stash him on IPP for this year.....or even this year, but I think Hekker will feel more comfortable for everyone this year.
An NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) exemption grants teams a special roster spot to develop eligible international athletes without affecting standard 53-man active rosters or traditional 17-man practice squad limits. [1, 2, 3]
The exemption is applied in two major phases: [1]
Training Camp: Each NFL club is permitted one international roster exemption from the start of the offseason program through the final roster cuts to 53 players, allowing them to keep a qualifying international player on the roster without him counting toward the standard 90-man offseason limit. [1, 2]
Practice Squad Exemption: If an IPP player clears waivers following training camp, they can be signed to the practice squad using an IPP exemption. This gives the team a 17th or 18th "extra" spot specifically dedicated to the international prospect. Players under this exemption are permitted to be elevated to the active roster for up to three regular-season games. [1, 2, 3]

So that sounds like the key. If he shows promise he could be claimed before ever making the practice squad.

There is likely a work around for that as well, like carry them an extra week until other teams rosters are more established and then try and waive him and sneak him onto the PS with the IPP, but who knows, maybe we end up carrying 2 punters, just because our new GM is a gangster.

off waivers at the end of FA? why not if you arent happy with your punter? they are only committed if he clears waivers and actually gets signed to our PS.

Well......a decent portion are already that.
"There are roughly 15 to 20 undrafted free agent (UDFA) punters currently active across the NFL, making up a significant portion of the league's 32 starting jobs. Unlike other positions where late-round picks dominate, over 50% of NFL punters historically enter the league as undrafted free agents"
