How do the Lions get last place in the NFCN and get the worst on paper schedule? That seems really unfair. Almost Viking-esq.

Random luck. The schedule itself is a fixed rotation with only 3 variables each year. The SOS model now used by Warren Sharp and others is based not on last year's records which are pretty meaningless but rather on current betting market pricing. Keep in mind it's still all a guestimate of sorts since we don't know for sure how strong teams actually are until they start playing next fall.
