(LOL: Panthers-Panthers ⬆️ Guess the Panthers are playing themselves.)

Expect plenty of flags to fly on Thursday night between Panthers and Packers

On Thursday night, the planets will align in a very specific way. And that could lead to more than a few penalties being called.

When the Panthers and Packers open Week 8, the game will pit the most-penalized team (the Packers, 9.3 per game) against the fourth most-penalized team (the Panthers, 8.7 per game). The Panthers also lead the league in penalty yards per game (79.2), while the Packers are second at 78.0 yards per game.

On top of that, referee Scott Novak’s crew leads the league in penalties called per game (22.7) and penalties accepted per game (20.1).

Throw the ingredients together, and there could be a stew of stoppages on Thursday night.

Either way, it’s something to monitor. Will the Packers and Panthers continue to draw an excess of penalty flags? Will Novak and crew continue to be flag-happy?

It could be a good idea to take a nap tomorrow afternoon. Thursday night’s game could last a little longer than usual.

The Packers and Panthers are coming off deflating losses, with Green Bay suffering a tough defeat in Detroit while Carolina was shellacked at home by division-rival Tampa Bay in its most lopsided loss of the season. The two aspiring contenders don’t have much time to lick their wounds, though, not with a Thursday night tilt on tap. Week 7 might not have created good vibes for either squad, but Carolina and Green Bay have plenty to play for as we reach midseason. The Panthers lead the NFC South -- the only division where no team is above .500 -- and the Packers are clinging to a wild-card spot in the cellar of one of the two divisions with four above-.500 clubs.

Which humbled playoff hopeful will bounce back under the prime-time lights in the NFL’s final game of October? Let’s take a closer look at some key subplots.

Three must-know storylines

1) Can the Panthers protect their most valuable asset? Bryce Young took five sacks last week and was pressured on a season-high 51.5% of his dropbacks despite facing a season-low blitz rate of 24.2%. It was representative of a startling trend for Dave Canales’ offense, which has lived on big plays through the air for much of the season. Young has been pressured on 44.3% of his dropbacks against four or fewer pass rushers, the highest rate among qualified passers, and has taken a league-high 15 of his 17 sacks on those plays, per Next Gen Stats. He’s the only qualified passer who has faced a higher pressure rate without the blitz than with it this season. Green Bay has generated pressure on 38.5% of dropbacks without blitzing, the fourth-highest rate in the NFL, and seven of its league-leading nine interceptions have come without a blitz. Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has schemed up a respectable pass rush despite being without the injured Micah Parsons all season, so Gannon has to be licking his chops when he sees the state of Carolina’s pass blocking, which took another major hit in Week 7 with the loss of stalwart right tackle Taylor Moton to season-ending injury. Rookie Monroe Freeling, who has missed time with an injury of his own this season, is being pressed back into action with a condensed week to prepare. Not ideal.

2) Will Green Bay's ground game awaken from its season-long slumber? RB1 Josh Jacobs made his 2026 debut against the Lions after spending the first six weeks on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, but the Packers are still the only team that has yet to rush for 100 yards in a game this season. Green Bay is averaging 2.9 yards per carry, fewest in the NFL, and its ball-carriers have been contacted at or behind the line of scrimmage on 47.3% of designed runs (sixth-highest), per Next Gen Stats. Carolina could offer some relief, though. The Panthers have allowed 5.2 yards per carry this season (most in the league) and have contacted ball-carriers at or behind the line on 33.3% of designed runs, the fourth-lowest rate. They were gashed by the Bucs for 258 rush yards and three rushing touchdowns last week. The Packers are badly beaten up on the offensive line heading into Thursday’s game, but sometimes the best way to help a beleaguered front five is to let the blockers plow forward with a steady diet of running plays. That would be antithetical to Green Bay’s standard mode of operation in 2026, but Matt LaFleur has to at least try to take some pressure off quarterback Jordan Love -- who could be without breakout receiver Matthew Golden -- by establishing balance on offense against a team that could reward such an effort.

3) Are the Packers facing a kicker crisis? Green Bay spent a sixth-round pick on Trey Smack back in April, making him the only kicker drafted this year. He started the season strong, making his first five field goal attempts -- including a 59-yarder -- but he’s gone just 6-for-11 since. Any misses are undesirable, but when a kicker starts whiffing on the more manageable tries, well, the pressure intensifies in a hurry. That’s the type of heat Smack is facing heading into Thursday night. NFL kickers have made 151 of 154 FG attempts of 35 or fewer yards this season, per Next Gen Stats. Smack accounts for two of the three misses, with both coming in last week’s 20-17 loss to the Lions. Smack was wide right on a 26-yarder in the first quarter and had a 35-yard try blocked late in the fourth quarter. He’s now tied for the second-lowest field goal percentage (68.8%) among kickers with at least 10 attempts this season. He has the worst field goal percentage over expected at -12.9%, per NGS. Also, he has the third-lowest extra point percentage (86.7%). Coincidentally, Panthers kicker Ryan Fitzgerald ranks last in that category at 70.6%, but he’s made all 11 of his field goal attempts. LaFleur is standing by his rookie kicker for now, but I have a feeling the calls to make a change will be raining down on Lambeau Field if Smack doesn’t bounce back against Carolina.

I think the Packers might lose this game. Bryce Young didn't look great last week, but he's having a pretty good year.

Would that really be an upset?

Panthers are either beating the crap out of their opponents or getting the shit beat out of them.
