WK 08 ~ Lions Week ~ Discussion, Pressers, News, etc.
We're headed to Detroit to take on the Lions. This game is really an important one. (Well, actually, they are all. IMO)
Here's to staying undefeated after taming those Kitties!

The six offenses the Vikings have played score 23.4 a game against everyone else. Against Minnesota, 12.3The question going into Detroit is whether 6-0 is a real defense or a soft schedule. We ran the schedule check, with numbers from nflverse through week 7.
The schedule isn't why. Green Bay, Chicago, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans and Indy score 23.4 points a game in their other games. Against Minnesota they've averaged 12.3. Five of the six were held under their average elsewhere. Green Bay was the exception (22 against a 20.3 average), and both Packers touchdowns came in the first half of week 1. Yes, the list of quarterbacks includes Tyson Bagent, Malik Willis, Tyler Shough and Daniel Jones. Those 23.4 points are those same teams with those same quarterbacks against everybody else.
Per play, the defense is first in the league and the gap to second-place Seattle is as big as the gap from Seattle to 15th. Grade every game against what that opponent does the rest of the year and it's still first, by about the same distance. It's first against the pass, first against the run, first in sack rate (21 on 206 dropbacks) and plus-6 in turnovers.
The offense is the other half. Over the last five games, Minnesota's offense has 4 touchdowns: Addison at Tampa, Jefferson and Jones in New Orleans, Hockenson against the Colts. The five offenses it played have 4 too. The difference is Will Reichard: 17 of 18 on field goals since week 1, plus 5 extra points. That's 56 points. Chicago, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans and Indy have 52 combined.
Every other team that started 6-0 since 2016 (the 2018 Rams, the 2019 Patriots and 49ers, the 2020 Steelers, the 2021 Cardinals, the 2022 Eagles, the 2024 Chiefs, this year's 49ers) had a top-12 offense through six games. Minnesota's is 28th per play. Kevin O'Connell said Sunday the offense is "not far off".
The other side. Detroit is the best offense the Vikings have seen, 3rd per play and 30.7 points a game, and Sunday at Ford Field (1 PM ET) is the first of three top-3 offenses in four weeks with Buffalo and San Francisco. Detroit's defense also ranks last per play too, which makes it the offense's best shot at a better day. Aaron Jones is day to day with the knee; the injury report starts today.
What hasn't changed in six games: three of them were tied or trailing after three quarters, and the Vikings won all three. They've given up 3 points in six fourth quarters. The next fewest in the league is 27.
The unstoppable force against the immovable object. Should be fun to watch. Not that they had much luck last year, but it will be a good test for our D.
Wonder what the excuses will be next week as to why we are frauds.
I predict Detroit doesn't break 20.
Kevin O'Connell on Jones: "He's day to day. He's doing well. He feels strong. He feels like he's going to be able to progress and get to a good place on game day, but we have to have plans in place regardless." https://t.co/7z0XAwdMy4

Jefferson still at the absolute peak of the league and they still can't get him the ball 😂😂😂 https://t.co/qTLSv5s105

Asked to explain Justin Jefferson's low production, Kevin O'Connell notes several reasons but starts with: "I think in the past we're throwing the ball a thousand times."

Indeed, the Vikings rank:
No. 4 in designed run % (43.3)
No. 31 in dropbacks (198)

Please throw to Gibbs on the perimeter, especially to Ginks side. Pretty please?

@greediron ~ They're going to have to hold him to under 81 yards. Which is at least 68 yards less than his game average.

Jahmyr Gibbs closing in on 6,000 scrimmage yards and 60 touchdowns in four NFL seasons
On Sunday against the Vikings, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs could join an elite club in NFL history.
Gibbs has 5,919 scrimmage yards and 58 scrimmage touchdowns since the Lions drafted him in 2023, so as soon as Sunday he could reach 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns in his career. If he does, he’ll be just the third player in NFL history to reach those benchmarks within his first three NFL seasons.
The others were Broncos Hall of Famer Terrell Davis, who had 7,594 scrimmage yards and 61 touchdowns in his first four NFL seasons, and Chargers Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, who had 7,921 scrimmage yards and 60 touchdowns in his first four NFL seasons.
Gibbs has 890 yards from scrimmage this season, which puts him on pace for 2,522 yards in 17 games. That would break the all-time NFL record of 2,509 scrimmage yards in a season, set by Chris Johnson in 2009.

They are loaded at weapons on offense...What a pickup Gibbs was for them.
