CBS Sports.com doesn't like our QB situation
8th Worst QB situation in the NFL - Minnesota Vikings QBs: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, Max Brosmer
One would think the Minnesota Vikings' signing of two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray would keep them off this list, but that's not the case. Murray earned his Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021. That's a lifetime ago in NFL years. From 2022 to 2025, Murray missed 30 of his possible 68 games. In the five games Murray played for the Cardinals in 2025, he averaged a career low 227.0 total yards per game.
KYLER MURRAY SINCE 2022, NFL RANKS AMONG 33 QBS WITH 25-PLUS STARTS IN SPAN | NFL QB RANKS | |
|---|---|---|
Win pct | .390 | 26th |
Yards per pass attempt | 6.6 | 29th |
TD pct | 3.8% | 28th |
Passer rating | 90.3 | 25th |
Recent first-round pick J.J. McCarthy was the worst quarterback in the NFL in 2025, which sparked the signing of Murray. McCarthy's performance was simply incredible considering the offensive ecosystem under 2024 Coach of the Year Kevin O'Connell. Despite an electrifying supporting cast, McCarthy ranked dead last in the league in completion percentage (57.6%), touchdown-to-interception ratio (11-12), and passer rating (72.6).
Murray could rediscover his early career form with Minnesota. Murray is one of just four players in NFL history with 20,000-plus passing yards (20,460) and 30-plus rushing touchdowns (32) through his first seven seasons, joining Josh Allen, Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson.
Week 1 starter: Kyler Murray
The level to which people don't understand the specific circumstances surrounding Kyler Murray in Arizona is astounding to me.

It's the best surround he's ever had, best coaching. All he has to do is perform. That's why he's here. Show the world. 🤘

This is good to hear. Barring injury to Murray, JJ's not going to be QB1 this year, but if he can show some growth during training camp and in the preseason games, he can really give the Vikings something to think about when it comes time to choose our 2027 QB. If Murray plays like I think he'll play in this offense, he's going to go right back to getting the big bucks. But will it be with the Vikings?
After the Darnold embarrassment, would the Vikings let another successful QB slip through their fingers? Honestly, I think they might. Murray for $50M or McCarthy for $5M? JJ has to show enough to make this a legit question.

its funny how there are always excuses for poor play by name QBs, its the OL, its the play calling, its dropped balls, .... and so on, not so much when it wasnt a name guy that struggles ( in this case Murray). maybe sometimes its just the player? We will find out, I think we have the horses to make Murray look better than he is, they have certainly done it in the past with Cousins, and were doing the best they could with our struggling cast last year, but unless Murray really lights it up, I mean win the division, win at least a couple playoff games, I will be dead set against giving him a franchise type offer. If he is simply "better" than what we've got behind him, we cant let that drive his contract negotiations.
I wasnt enamored with him in college, I havent been blown away by his pro career, and I think his playing style is leading to a premature decline to his career, I understand he had obstacles, but every player does, we cant get locked into this guy because of excuses.... which I think is the biggest reason I didnt want him here to begin with, that over and above the wasted time with JJMs development.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?
#Vikings T Brian O’Neill said JJ McCarthy was the one who bought the box for the Wild game where he invited guys from the team.

Would not be surprised if most of the players want McCarthy to be the starter. My guess is Murray starts the season and McCarthy finishes it
Would u rather have 1 Jordan Love?
Or 2 question marks on Murray/McCarthy?
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

lol, not sure what you're getting at here, but pretty sure he's QB1 for Green Bay, isn't he? 😅
Love needs to make the next step toward being a great QB, a hurdle he needs to get over. He's a talented kid. But he doesn't throw a lot of TDs. He seemed to peak in 2023.
