At some point you have to pay the guys that have produced, especially when they are young core players, and does anybody disagree that Bynum has been a core player and leader for our defense? If we were up against the cap, maybe you could justify letting him walk...but not when you are one of the league leaders in cap space and it's an extremely weak crop of free agents as is. This would be one of the dumber decisions in free agency if it plays out

I'm all for Jackson. Bynum and Murphy are going to get paid more than they are worth. Like Maroon said, paying money for CB's is money well spent. Although we do know Flores likes to use safeties like linebackers which gives them more value. Murphy has great ball skills but not great cover skills. Both Bynum and Murphy are going to get overpaid in free agency; hopefully not by the Vikings.

I like Samuel but none of those guys are better players than our own guy Byron Murphy, so why not just spend the money on him? I think both Bynum and Murphy are good players whose production benefitted greatly from an opportunistic, attacking Flores defense, over-inflating their market value. I think most of us have been saying this for months, so there's no "we didn't sign him, so he sucks" retrofitting going on here. 

I hope we're still able to land Murphy on a reasonable deal. That's one less corner we need to add. But I think it would be a mistake to spend anything close to top-of-market money on him. Mostly I just want to see what the Vikings do at both positions in free agency and the draft before I join you on the "woe is us" bandwagon. Free agency hasn't even started yet.

Bynum's been starting games for us since his rookie year and has played under 3 different coordinators. I thought he was one of the very few bright spots for us under "Easy" Ed Donatell. So I'll disagree that the Flores scheme inflated numbers or was the reason for his success. 

And nobody's on a "woe is us" bandwagon, but it's dumb to let young, productive players who are leaders in the locker room out of your own building when we finally have cap money available to bring them back, especially in a mostly putrid free agency crop league wide. Sign your own guys. Not saying to give him top 5 safety money, but he's played well under a rookie contract, earned a raise, and that should be in Minnesota.

That's just it, I think Bynum DOES want top of the market safety money.  I don't disagree, I'd love to have Bynum back since he's a good player and great locker room guy.  But paying him top of the market safety money isn't a smart investment in terms of roster construction.

Well everybody does, but what justification would he have to demand 20+ million a season? Pro-Bowls..no, All Pro teams...no, playoff wins..no,  but for the Vikings he's an important piece to the defense and a leader in the prime of his career. You don't let guys like that leave the building and create roster holes where there doesn't need to be any. I'd feel much better about letting him walk if I knew Harrison Smith was coming back, but as of now, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Now I'm reading some Viking beat writer from the Athletic is reporting there's a "very high likelihood" Harrison Smith comes back for another year. If this is the case, then I'll feel a little better about Bynum leaving
