I'll take a Darnold with a chance rather than a check down artist with no chance.
Wins are the only thing that counts in the NFL.
2023 Cousins went 4-4
2024 Darnold went 6-2

The throwing short of the sticks thing is silly. Where does the defense play on 4th down? They're all bunched up at the sticks. Throwing short and asking the receiver to run to the sticks actually works more often than you'd think. And when it does nobody says a word.

But that was damn funny!

Hey, its like Washington...It feeds the narrative people want to hear. I agree, it was funny.

I think that ATL/Vikings game will be a good one...

By throwing to a receiver well short of the sticks, he's "hoping" that he can avoid getting tackled and get the first down.
I have learned in my life that "hope" is not a strategy.

Please God, just one Lombardi before I die.

6 ticks on the clock, 4th and 4, your kicker is shit from more than 40 or so... LOS is the 43 so as it sits you are at a 60 yarder to tie,  getting the yardage to make a first down with Kirks read really only gets you down to about a 55 yard attempt...which isnt likely with the clock being what it is unless he gets out of bound since you no time outs left.  throwing short of the sticks did nothing for the win or tie, it just was another meaningless completion.  That ball should have been going towards the endzone in hopes of a miracle or a defensive penalty.  That was a choke.

EDIT: forgot to mention that your kicker was already 0-3 outside of the 30 on the day, and Kirk is the one cashing the heros pay check, not the kicker... yep, choke.

Its the context of the individual play, he shouldn't have thrown that. But to MB's point, it ok to throw it short if the pass catcher has time to make a few football moves, the defensive player isn't right on his ass or at least far enough away that forward momentum by the receiver can't be stopped quickly or easily. That wasn't the case here on this throw from Kirko. And we've seen him do it before in a Viking's uniform.

Kirk being Kirk is not exactly news.

As with everything Kirk, you can find 100 reasons why he made the right throw, and 100 reasons why that's not a winning play. After 5ish years of that back and forth, I for one am content to chuckle from the sidelines at Falcons fans now.

I liked Kirko Chainz fine, but as you mention it was time to move on. I think he can only get a team so far.

Yup. I actually enjoy rooting for him to do well as a Falcon because if does well I can cheer for him and if he fucks up, well it didn't hurt the Vikings. Kinda the best of both worlds.

Mid 4th quarter, Chicago just scored making it a one-score game, Darnold sits out with a foot thing, 3rd and 13, very important play upcoming, Nick Mullens comes in...

Just curious if anyone bitched about this throw being...anyone?...anyone?...short of the...anyone? Sticks! That's Right. When it works, no one says a word. In fact, they call it "brilliant." :-)

winning on the road, back up QB comes in cold, I dont give a fuck where he throws it as long as it doesnt end up in the hands of the opposition.

there is a big damn difference between bitching about a back up QB making a cold throw, vs a mercenary QB that has leveraged money beyond his abilities out of the franchise and then failing to deliver what is needed to win.

Its a beautiful play design. But nobody was near Jones, Mullens put it on him super quick....and the design was for blockers to engage downfield, which they did, including WRers. Kirko has thrown short of the sticks on out patterns before where the receiver had no chance at all to go anywhere but out of bounds or to get tackled immediately. Big difference. Jones was going full speed with enough room and time to make some moves when he caught the ball, exactly as designed. That was a BIG time call and throw coming in ice cold.

What was Hock going to do on this throw? Nothing, that's what......and FAR short of the 1st down:

This isn’t about that.  It’s about the thousands who piled on afterwards saying that you should never, EVER, throw short of the chains on 3rd or 4th down. My point was that sometimes it’s your best option. Superstart QBs do it all the time and when it works no ever notices.

One was a 3rd down hitting a receiver wide open and in stride with a backup qb.  The other a 4th down angled towards the sideline by a qb who effectively gives up any chance his team has of winning.  Yeah, they're completely alike.  lol

That I agree with, and I believe I said as much earlier about your point: construct the right kind of play and throwing short of the 4th down mark can work. But that's not how Kirko has failed in that area, so its not apples for apples if that's the comparison....that was my only point. Maybe you were meaning in a more general way, not a Kirko direct way.
