Harrison Smith Says 2026 Will Be His Last Season
Harrison Smith returned to the Vikings because he still wanted to play. Now he says this will be his final season.
“I’ve always left the door open in the past,” Smith told Richard Sherman on the future Hall of Famer’s podcast. “But no, this is my last year for sure.” He allowed for the possibility that he might never say an absolute no to anything, but the message was clear: at 37, after 15 seasons with Minnesota, Smith intends for 2026 to be the end.
The announcement lands differently because Smith had only just come back. He spent much of the offseason at home in Tennessee, staying in shape but not fully committing to another season. Then his four-year-old daughter asked when the family was going back to Minnesota. Smith said the question helped rekindle the itch to return.
“I feel like I got a little more to give,” Smith said in September. “Help some guys out, still make some plays. See what we can do.”
That was the reason for coming back: not a farewell tour, but the belief that he could still contribute. His announcement now gives the season a different shape. The Vikings have about three more months with the player who has been a constant through coaching changes, roster rebuilds and multiple versions of the franchise. Smith has spent his entire NFL career in Minnesota since the team drafted him 29th overall in 2012.
A role that still matters
Smith’s workload has been smaller than it was at his peak. He has played 140 defensive snaps through five games, between 25 and 31 each week, or about 48 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He played 793 snaps in 2025 and 1,062 in 2024.
Smith told Sherman that Minnesota was “playing it by ear” with his usage. He pointed to the team’s different safety looks and said he was “ready for whatever” as the season unfolds. His workload could grow as he gets further removed from his late return, but the Vikings also have reason to manage the 37-year-old’s snaps and keep him fresh for the stretch run.
In Brian Flores’ defense, he can threaten pressure near the line, rotate into coverage, communicate checks and help teammates recognize what an offense is trying to do before the snap.
Prior to the season opener, Packers coach Matt LaFleur called Smith “the straw that stirs the drink” in Flores’ defense, praising his command and ability to get Minnesota “in and out of calls.” He’s often described as an extension of the coach on the field. Those responsibilities do not always show up in a stat line, but they help explain why Smith’s return mattered even before he played a snap.
A final chapter with unfinished business
Smith’s legacy is already secure in Minnesota. He entered the season with 39 career interceptions, the most among active NFL players, along with 21.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles and four defensive touchdowns. He is one of only six defensive backs in league history with at least 35 interceptions and 20 sacks; the other five are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The ending almost came a year earlier. Minnesota honored Smith after the 2025 season, and Kevin O’Connell hoped to give him a final kneel-down in the finale. The Vikings never got the ball back. Smith ultimately returned, partly because he still wanted the competition and partly because he believed he had something to offer younger teammates.
Minnesota’s secondary also features established player Joshua Metellus, as well as Theo Jackson, who has improved in his second season as a starter. Although their snap counts might have dipped, rookies Jakobe Thomas and Jacob Thomas might be the biggest beneficiaries of Smith’s return, as they can pick his brain for a full season.
Now the finish is no longer a question of whether he might come back. Smith says this is the last year. There is no promise of a storybook ending, and he has not suggested that he returned just to collect one. He came back to play, help the Vikings win and pass on what he knows.
The Vikings will decide how much they need him week to week. Smith, by his own account, is prepared for whatever role that requires. But the calendar has changed: every game, every defensive check and every moment in purple now belongs to the final season of a remarkable one-team career.

What a call by @PAOnTheMic for his 500th game! The #Vikings get the win, Harrison Smith becomes only the 3rd player in #NFL history with 40 INTs & 20 Sacks. Incredible way to end the game & stay undefeated.

Harrison Smith seals it with his 40th pick. He's the fourth player in NFL history with 40 INTs and 20 sacks in his career. Josh Metellus tried to get him to dance in the end zone, with Cam Bynum in the building, but Smith wouldn't do it.

With his game-winning interception, @harrismith22 (40) joins Hall of Famers Ronde Barber and Charles Woodson as the only defensive backs in NFL history to record 40+ interceptions and 20+ sacks.#INDvsMIN https://t.co/XF3Lo1MRx8

Harrison Smith just casually dropped postgame that he was at a golf course this summer drinking beers with Ronde Barber for four hours and trading stories. Sure. Of course. Barber, one of the few with 40 INTs and 20 sacks, was telling him to go get INT No. 40.

I wonder if Jamal Adams would have made it out of training camp, if Smith would have come back this year. Maybe so, but I would surmise that Adams was brought in to be his "replacement". Not that you could replace him.
