Blackfeet Chief's Descendants Fight to Restore Redskins Name & Logo

Blackfeet Chief's descendants fight to restore Washington Redskins name and logo
The descendants of the Blackfeet chief who inspired the former Washington NFL team's logo are now fighting to restore the Redskins name and image that were removed in 2020 because it was deemed a slur.
Chief Two Guns White Calf was born on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and inspired the team's mascot. The logo was created in 1971 by Walter "Blackie" Wetzel to honor the chief.
"He was such a leader and he had a hold on the National Football League for 50 years," Morningstar Gopher said.

Native American activist groups fought to have the "Redskins" name removed, but descendants of the chief say the former logo brings a lot of pride — and that they want him to be remembered, not erased.
"They tried to erase us, like we didn't exist anymore," estate lead Kenneth Conway said.
The descendants of the chief claim their thoughts weren't even considered when the movement behind changing the team's logo and name began.
"They did not even ask our family for approval. They didn't ask for nothing from us. I mean, we literally got erased," historian Brock Conway said.
Gopher decided to rally other direct descendants of the chief, like herself, to make the change they want to see.
"We're hopeful for a meeting with President Trump in order to help get this pushed forward," Gopher said.
Along with attorney Denise Rosado, the estate is hoping to restore the former name, the logo of the chief, and get the team stadium renamed after their grandfather.
"It would be a big win in his pocket in terms of helping the Native people in securing the first-ever NFL stadium named after a Native American," Gopher said.
The family says that restoration of their grandfather's image and name would be a huge win for everyone.
"There's a lot of diehard Redskins fans down in Washington, D.C.," Gopher said.
"This would be a win-win, I think, for everybody. It would be a win-win for the family because it would be so honored and the history of their ancestors," Rosado said.
The family hopes to have a seat with the team to discuss the importance of restoring the former mascot soon.
"We symbolize him with honor by, you know putting his picture on our walls," Brock Conway said.

Fantastic! I’ve seen this before (thanks for posting) and now it appears to be gaining legs again. Hopefully, they figure this out and reverse the beyond absurd decision to move away from the Redskins name.
Rich with history, completely wiped away as a result to snowflakes thinking they know better and waste time creating problems that were never there in the first place.
Next up after this gets fixed, the freaking Guardians…
I think there are definitely two mindsets concerning this with Native Americans.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
There are certainly strong emotions with these things. I was part of the Marquette naming committee when they were basically forced by the woke mob to change their name from Warriors in the early 90's. We met with the local tribes and they strongly advocated for retention of the Warrior name. The ironic thing was that Marquette was originally named the Hilltoppers but changed the name to the Warriors in the 50's out of deference to the Native tribes as a reference to the long term relationship between the Jesuit Priest, Pere Marquette, who the University was named after and the local tribes. So...Marquette changed to the Warriors.
The issue in the 90's was a small but VERY vocal minority who wouldn't even civilly discuss continued use of the Warrior name which was favored by the student population, alumni and the local tribes. I had a few of the woke mob that would approach those with a different viewpoint (including me) in meetings and literally scream in their faces (again...including me). I didn't see how something that neither the students, general population nor native tribes found objectionable was an issue. Frankly, the Native elders (and population) were proud of the Warrior connection. There were a few items that needed to be addressed namely the already retired Native Character Mascot, Willy Wampum, that previously had been replaced with actual tribal students doing a war dance at half time. There were scholarships that were offered to the local native tribes to be one of the mascots.
When it became apparent the woke mob wasn't going to let it go...a group of us suggested retaining the Warrior name but changing the mascot to a helmeted Roman Warrior type mascot (Roman Catholic University). The vocal few wasn't having that because...get this...it was disrespectful to the tribes to change the focus from the Native Warriors to Roman Warriors. Eventually, the University settled on the Golden Eagles to make it all go away. It's tough to have a reasonable discussion based on pure emotion. Facts didn't really matter.
The Redskins issue is likely more problematic than Warriors but equally emotional.
Go big or go home. Looking for a stadium name as well.
The Fighting Sioux name at UND was similar. 2 of the 3 Sioux tribes wanted to keep the name, but the loud vocal minority won out.

I grew up going to school next to an Indian reservation in the U.P. of Michigan (Bark River Harris the school, Hannaville was the Indian reservation) and it was integrated. The tribe was Potawatomi. Many friends to this day from there and I can tell you there are two schools of thought from them on the name Redskins. If I didn't have that perspective, I wouldn't have chimed in to this thread.
Yes, we grew up calling them Indians as well....but Indians are from India.
I do not see the issue that some are thinking. The article isn't about being us "Politically Correct" or how we personally feel about words/terms/phrases, etc. that we consider a slur.
The story is about the descendants of Chief Two Guns White Calf wanting the name & logo restored. They weren't/aren't offended by the name. They consider it an honor. They're upset that they weren't ever consulted on the matter. They feel it's unfair that an activist group took it upon themselves to change it.

Let's say a school, park, office building, hospital wing, team, etc was named in honor after one of your ancestors & several years later a group of people (w/o any just cause, just due to personal thoughts/feelings), took it upon themselves that the name was "Politically Incorrect" or a slur & renamed it w/o consulting you. You would be upset too. Doesn't matter what side of the coin you're on.

I live in Oklahoma (originally from Mn.) & there's a huge Indian population. Been around them since I was 10 years old. While some do prefer "Native American", most prefer "Indian", & some just don't give a sh*t either way. LOL ~
If they're applying for a role number with a particular tribe, they're asked what per cent of Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole Indian they are.

The God hating Marxist have been doing this to western culture for years. Blacks are African American (they are Americans) LGBTQ victim class, women are a victim class, the poor are a victim class, men now can be women (impossible) Founding Fathers where racist, if you are white you are racist. Colleges have been indoctrinating useful idiots for years. Then that group goes out and try's to destroy the country because everyone thing is unfair, everyone is oppressed by the patriarchy. Oh don't get me started on Queers for Palestine. 2 Peter 3:3-4

Very true
Man, who could have foreseen this devolving to name calling?

I live in the four corners area in New Mexico, bordering on the north boundary of the Navajo Indian Reservation. They are some of the nicest people I've talked with. Very open and pleasant, also they sure like to joke and laugh.

I’m guessing at one point if you owned another human, or if you framed that person as 3/5th of a human, ya might be racist. I would also conclude if you impregnate someone you own, you’re probably a rapist too.
I’m a heterosexual who condemns what’s going on in Gaza. Will that belief turn me gay, or was the jab going to do that already?
Question: who indoctrinated you into UI status?
