Kyler Murray returns to action: How long will the leash be if he struggles?

The Vikings are 2-0 and making a quarterback change. Will they stick with Murray even if the results aren’t there?

The Minnesota Vikings are 2-0 and making a change at quarterback heading into Week 3.

Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and will be back in action against the Buccaneers on Sunday. He played just 11 snaps in Week 1 prior to the scary collision that knocked him out of the game, then sat out last week’s contest in Chicago. In a sense, this will be his true Vikings debut, after the last one was quickly cut short.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Murray will be back in the lineup this week. He was always going to reclaim his starting job as soon as he was healthy. Even though the Vikings held a training camp competition involving J.J. McCarthy, Murray was probably always the clear favorite to be Minnesota’s QB1 from the day he signed his contract in March. Internally, there remains quite a bit of excitement about what he can accomplish in Kevin O’Connell’s offense, with so many talented pieces around him.

Had Carson Wentz played lights out in relief of Murray, there may have been some degree of controversy — at least externally — around the Vikings’ starting role moving forward. That did not happen. Wentz deserves credit for how he stayed the course and connected on some throws after slow starts, but in two games, he completed 59 percent of his passes for 276 yards (138 per game) and 3 touchdowns.

Wentz didn’t turn the ball over in either game, but he had an interception negated by a penalty against the Packers and a potential interception dropped against the Bears. Both plays occurred in the red zone, where turnovers are even more damaging. By PFF passing grade, Wentz ranks 24th of the 31 NFL QBs who have at least 40 dropbacks so far.

Murray will look to make a much stronger second impression after some shaky results in his 11 pre-injury snaps. On his very first dropback in a Vikings uniform, the Packers had an unblocked blitzer come free up the middle and Murray compounded the protection mistake by lofting an ill-advised pass into double coverage for an interception. He wound up 3 of 5 for 18 yards and a pick, with two rushes for nine yards, before the injury.

Did he look great? No. Is it a tiny sample size? It sure is. Murray has a seven-year track record of solid play with the Cardinals, even with plenty of ups and downs mixed in. He’s completed 67 percent of his career passes, thrown for twice as many touchdowns (121) as interceptions (61), and has a lifetime passer rating of 92. He had some mixed results early in this year’s training camp as he learned the Vikings’ offense and went against an excellent defense, but he also had some very strong days, especially after being named the team’s starter.

The Vikings’ hope is that Murray shook off some nerves in that Packers game and will be ready to play fundamentally sound football this week and beyond. The focus will be on keeping it simple, doing his job, and taking care of the ball. As was the case with Wentz, the Vikings will look to establish a running game, lean on their defense, and avoid asking Murray to be a hero.

“Starting point is he’s just watched Carson function in a way that — Carson wasn’t doing crazy things,” O’Connell said this week. “He was just protecting the football, making good decisions, making some big-time throws when he could, and running the show. I think (Kyler) saw some plays get made. I think he saw our team play totally connected and complimentary of the other two phases and what that can do for the Minnesota Vikings on a Sunday.”

Murray’s leash

The question some are asking, as Murray prepares to take the field again, is how long his leash will be if he does struggle. With the Vikings 2-0, will there be pressure to go back to Wentz if Kyler doesn’t play well over the next few weeks?

Anything can happen, of course. And if Murray is a total turnover-prone disaster, those conversations may eventually take place. But the reality is that his leash is probably quite long, assuming he performs at anything close to a level on par with his career resume. Wentz is a quality backup quarterback, but the Vikings have little incentive to go back to him as their starter if it isn’t a necessity.

The Vikings spent this offseason adapting their offense to fit Murray’s strengths. Even if he tones down his scrambling a bit in an effort to protect himself from injury, the Vikings have high hopes for his ability to make in-rhythm throws from the pocket, extend plays when needed, and produce as a passer. They believe they can start to generate more explosive plays through the air while continuing to take care of the ball.

Murray’s first opportunity to shake off his 11-snap debut and show what he can do comes this Sunday against a Buccaneers defense that has only three sacks and one takeaway through two games.

“My expectation is we’re going to protect the football and play our role offensively while continuing to grow and look like the offense we know that we can become,” O’Connell said.

Let's go get a W and start 3-0 with all wins in the conference to start. 👍 Great for tiebreakers and possible seeding in the playoffs potentially. 💜

I'm with Sticky. I don't wanna think about Murray stinking out the joint because we really need him to play well. BEAT TAMPA. Start there.

I'd say three games, all losses, but only if you can point to Murray as the biggest reason we lost those games. In those three games, Kyler will have had to play worse than any other three game stretch in his NFL career, which seems pretty unlikely to me, given the ridiculous upgrade in surround.

But sure, it's possible. Anything's possible. I sure didn't expect the back-leg pop fly he threw against the Packers. He could struggle to regain his confidence—even more important, his swagger—in an offense that is still new to him.

But honestly, if he stays healthy, I'm expecting very good things.

The decision was made to have Murray be the starter and Wentz is the veteran backup. Murray will be the guy as long as he's healthy this season. Where it would get interesting is if he goes down with a season ender... do the Vikings pivot to JJ McCarthy or roll with Wentz?

True, but he posted W's in both games. Last week in Chicago is a almost a throwaway because field conditions were so sloppy, and not really a fair indication of Wentz (remember two passes bouncing off Jefferson's hands because it was so wet?)

And yes, he should have had two picks, but didn't fumble the ball either.

The Oline needs to come to play against a stiff Tampa D and give Murray a reasonable sense of time to throw. Unlike the D, which I am totally expecting to show up and keep us in any game.

How's that for confidence? What a change!

Please God, just one Lombardi before I die.

All the talk about Kyler coming to a better situation in Minnesota was true. No way the cards win the same 2 games the Vikings just won.

Murray and JJ both watched the last 2 weeks playout. Point being don't turn the ball over and this team is in every game. 6 total penalties for 45 yards also says this team keeps unforced errors and mistakes to a minimum. They both need to follow that.

FWIW besides his rookie year, kyler doesn't take sacks and doesn't throw INT's. If he repeats that he'll be fine, everything else will take care of itself.

Don't trade JJ.

I mean seriously? At what point to we have to be in to put Wince back on the field over Murray? I mean if we are 4-10 or something, at that point put McCarthy in and close your eyes...
