I wonder if they are thinking an O'Neil replacement down the road??
I dont get drafting this position over a few others with much more need. This was something discussed in chat too.

Per Todd McShay

Early in his career, Tiernan could fill a swing tackle role while also providing guard depth as he develops into a potential starter. Players like Bernhard Raimann, Luke Goedeke, and Braden Smith have overcome similar length limitations to stick at tackle. There’s also a Northwestern precedent for shorter-armed tackles moving inside and thriving—Peter Skoronski is already among the league’s best. If Tiernan follows that path, Sam Cosmi is a strong stylistic comparison.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

A lot of people seem to be really liking this selection in the Twitterverse.

Who Knows Idk GIF by MOODMANOverview

Highly experienced college tackle who is likely to kick inside due to a lack of length that affects his protection projection. Tiernan is tall but carries the denseness of frame and core strength of a guard. Feet feature good initial quickness and he takes excellent angles on the move. He often finds early positioning advantages as a base blocker but lacks the anchor and play strength to consistently fortify/sustain. Leaky edges in pass pro will be less concerning with smaller spaces to patrol, while his punch timing and lateral quickness provide advantages. “Solid” feels like the ceiling for Tiernan as a guard/swing tackle who can eventually elevate into a starting role.

I was just saying how we didn't get jumped this year, but it looks like we did. I didn't realize Dunker was a trade up. Seattle had 96, Vikings had 97 and 98 and the Steelers 99. Steelers traded up to 96 with Seattle and took Dunker in front of us. You don't do that unless you know something. Not many people expected the Vikings to take a tackle that early, but Steelers sure seemed to. The intel NFL teams have is pretty remarkable.

The Steelers have a draft pipeline running from Iowa City, Stevie Wonder probably saw that coming…😇

I love this response, from the chuckle to the answer. And I agree with him. While size does matter 😉, heart, quickness, and determination can be more important.

So is this T-Rex going to be our short-armed O'Neill depth or our too-tall Fries replacement? I think if Fries isn't careful, he could lose his starting job in training camp.

I'm hopeful for Fries...

Big bounce back after awful injury

Steve Hutch v2.0

Oh man I sure hope so. But in 48 starts he's been great in about 10 of them and league average in the rest. I think Tiernan is as much a cover for Fries as he is for O'Neill and Darrisaw.
