Fontenot on Cousins: We're comfortable moving forward with him as a backup. #Falcons
This seems like a long time ago for Korko......

Terry Fontenot is an idiot. "Hey look we got ourselves a 45 million dollar backup, derp." Arthur Blank must be senile or this guy would be out of a job.

I am guessing that its a trade statement. Translation, we are not releasing Kirk Cousins, so if you want him, you will have to trade for him.

Fontenot's comments could be construed as posturing for a potential trade. Cousins has a no-trade clause. If Atlanta traded him, the team would be on the hook for the $37.5 million of remaining proration, while his fully guaranteed $27.5 million base salary would transfer to his new team. There's also a likelihood that Atlanta would have to eat some of that $27.5 million in a deal.
Regarding a potential trade of Cousins, Fontenot said "we will take those things as they come."
"Everyone would have to be good with it, from his camp, his supporters, [Cousins' agent] Mike McCartney, Kirk Cousins, us, the other team," Fontenot said. "There's a lot of layers to that and we'll take those as they come."
McCartney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from ESPN on Thursday.

No one is trading for Kirk unless they get a boat of picks to go with him. The odds he's the backup in Atlanta next year seem so small it's hardly worth considering. He'll probably be released and some team will sign him for $8M (?) instead of $28M.

The thing is Korko is a good dude, genuine. He works hard, prepares and sincerely wants to excel. Cares about his family and his faith. He's had a pretty good career as far as QBs in the NFL go and he has now generational wealth. He's more than fine no matter how this ends. But from a football perspective, the Viking's dodged a bullet and Atlanta is going to pay for this which is turning out to be a horrible decision signing him. Way too early to judge Penix, he's barely played, but his completion percentage is low and he's thrown as many TDs as INTs starting out.

I think the odds of Kirk having a different year here in 24 vs what unloaded in ATL are high...IOW, KOC could have helped keep him on the rails.
Darnold has (for the most part) played at a significantly higher level than most imagined, Ive been engaged as a fan. Besides, I was ready to move on after 6 years of Cousins tbh.
It was feeling old and stale.

Arthur Blank is the guy who wanted Cousins. Like the Wilfs, he didn’t want to go into the season without a viable option at QB. They’ve already experienced the joys of having 2 seasons marred by not having a viable option at QB. As a team they went for Cousins and then also went for Penix.
They gambled and overspent to ensure that they at least had competent QB play, and it didn’t quite work out for them as Cousins body deteriorated over the season.
It just is what it is, obtaining quality QB play isn’t cheap. The people poo-pooing the Falcons are the same people that are shitting on the other teams for investing heavily in a rookie QB, having no contingency plans, and firing everyone involved for that one player not working out. If either Cousins or Penix works out, no one will care what it costs them.
But regarding the quote above, what are they supposed to say? No sane GM is going to badmouth a guy on his team that he’s hoping to still get value out of, either in a trade, or potentially in Cousins outcompeting Penix if his ankle heals to a suitable level, and if his ankle looks decent and he’s pushing off it and throwing with velocity, there will be 3-4 teams looking at him as a short term solution and willing to trade something for him, because teams are desperate for competent QB play.
