For the first time, I used Chat GPT....I know, we're late to the party.
In this case, to address questions my wife and I have while dealing with Covid and taking Paxlovid over the holidays.
To say the interaction was deep would be an understatement. The perspectives, the follow-up questions it suggested and answered back with? I have never experienced something like that. At least with a software/computer/screen.
Its way beyond google on steroids. I am both impressed as hell and terrified...

I feel the same way, totally blown away by it, but it is also scary as to how human it is and makes me think we are not too far away from having robots that we will interact with.
I also resisted and was late jumping in, but use it daily now for so many things, especially find it valuable for a regular counselor, so insightful and more empathetic and supportive than any therapist I have been to.

Not just white collar...but yes, this is really going to change things, and in the long run, I dont think for the better for us I dont see the need for most humans much longer in this world.
In the short term, I see some amazing advances in Healthcare and about every single other segment of our society, but ultimately we won't be needing most all jobs and then what do all these long living humans do besides become useless?

Most people already think that they are performing worthless jobs. That we define our worth by our jobs which we define as worthless is a bigger problem than AI taking our jobs.
Regarding chatgpt, its very hit or miss. It isn't intelligent. Its a more advanced autocorrect. It does best on things that there's a lot of correct information out there that it can copy and parrot back to you. It does less good when you ask it things that aren't widely out there or that require figuring stuff out.
I think a good thing to get perspective on AI is to start asking it questions on things which you are an expert and just see where it gets things write or wrong.

Well, probably not so much: there's a huge glut of engineers now as the bigger companies like Facebook, Apple, Google, Netflix, etc. have laid off many they hired during COVID. Plus all the kids that were told to code 7 or 8 years ago and have gotten computer science degrees to not be able to get jobs out of college because there are so many good experienced engineers floating around looking for jobs after being laid off. Its a very tough entry point for grads. My son is in the field and works for a very big and solid company so he's good, but AI initiatives are paramount for every company. But most aren't hiring JUST for AI, they are taking current staff and moving some of them over to it. AI still makes way too many mistakes....but its getting better.
AI right now is overhyped and the companies like NVIDIA are WAY overvalued. Its still hard for companies to monetize AI in a significant way. The media, as they do, overhypes everything and that applies to AI as well....especially its impact on jobs. The only true financial bubble that exists right now on the Market is AI companies.

I don't know any that think their job is worthless or that it somehow defines them. I do see a lot of occupations that currently employ many that wont be in 20 years, and I dont see much for new areas of employment in the less than specialized RD fields, and some of the trades. I think that leaves a lot of people without a marketable use in society and they become viewed as expendable by those that are still making contributions.
Automation and AI will combine to change the world as we know it. This is why I dont put as much concern into Musks fears of population collapse as he does. I dont see how a large human population factors into the future we are seeing developed currently.

When AI starts learning from its mistakes and improving exponentially, which it likely is already doing, things are going to get nuts. The AI videos we're seeing now will look embarrassingly cheap and dated compared to what they'll look like in just a few years.
