Excellent article. Proved himself so much they cut two 3rd round draft picks.

Story is from last September, but is still offers a good insight how Mason has been able to punch above his weight in the NFL.

Yep, the story was just before last season began which is even more insightful considering the year that Mason had carrying the ball 153 times averaging 5.2 yards a carry. I like the combo of Jones and Mason for 2025/26, should be effective. Draft yourself a horse next Spring and then you can watch Jones and Mason go for 2027, hell could even wait until the Draft of '27 but might not be optimal as it will be a strong need by that time.

I think some fans aren't understanding that Jones and Mason will be the guys NEXT season as well. Dead cap number for 2026 combined would be almost $14 million....but zero in 2027. The team is very privately stoked for Aaron Jones on lesser carries and workload, more big plays.

AJ’s cap hit next year is $16.4M. The Vikings are obviously not going to absorb that for a soon to be 32-year-old, injury prone back. His deal was written to be a one-more-year deal. He’ll either be released after this season or restructured into a salary more commensurate with his age and status as a likely backup. But Jones doesn't seem to be especially stupid, so I think the latter is more likely. I could see a situation where he accepts a much lower salary to finish out his career in purple, similar to Harrison Smith.

Also notable is that the fears about how far over the cap the Vikings are in 2026 includes a lot of stuff like the Jones cap hit that just won't become reality.
