The #Chiefs are planning to franchise tag star guard Trey Smith, sources say. An intriguing move, as KC keeps one of its best players for $23.4M on a 1-year, fully guaranteed deal.

Surprising considering how much they're paying Humphrey and Thuney. Most thought he was definitely leaving.

Absolutely did not see this coming. Their top 6 players take up an inordinate percentage of the cap. Unless this sets up a tag and trade.

Shocking

As I mentioned a bit ago, I don't think this FA period is going to be that robust.

On the plus side, I kept insisting he was going to get OT money. I just didn’t think it was going to be via the franchise tag.

Tag and trade is possible I guess. The tag probably means they don't have Smith in their long term plans, but maybe want him for one more shot at a Lombardi. But man, 100% of that $23M hits their cap this year. Maybe Mahomes is restructuring.

Much less intriguing for us now in a tag and trade since we don't have the draft capital to pull it off. Maybe we do look at someone like Tevon Jenkins a little more closely now

Just read on top of making Smith the highest paid guard in league history, Creed Humphrey is the highest paid center in the league, Thuney is making 16 million a year, and Jaawan Taylor is the third highest paid RT making 20 million annually. Again I ask...how are they doing all this?

On top of that, their OT's cost them that SB more than their IOL

6th highest salary is Kelce at nearly $20 million. They’ve drafted extremely well including two guys I was pounding the table for in McDuffie and Chenal. Mahomes clocks in at $66 million, so I’m guessing a restructure is coming.

Draft well and manipulate the cap. Easy.
