Ex-Viking Kalil charged after his Twin Cities pizza place allegedly sells beer to minorMatt Kalil, a former Minnesota Viking now playing for the Carolina Panthers, is being held criminally responsible for a teenager being served alcohol at a Twin Cities pizza restaurant he owns.
Kalil was charged Monday in Hennepin County District Court with selling alcohol to a minor at Pieology Pizza in Maple Grove, even though he was not present. He’s been summoned to appear in court Dec. 15 for arraignment.
Kalil, an offensive lineman who played with the Vikings from 2012 to 2016, owns the Pieology Pizza franchising rights in Minnesota. Other outlets operate in St. Paul and Mankato.
The charging document explains that on the afternoon of Oct. 26, a 19-year-old woman was sold a beer by a 17-year-old server. A police officer intervened, confiscated the beer and called the general manager and told her of the illegal sale.
The general manager said she was newly hired and hadn’t gone through the required alcohol licensing training.
“In order to charge the proper person,” the court filing continued, the officer determined that Kalil was the owner and is “the defendant” responsible for the sale.

What struck me about the story was that the police officer "intervened."
In Minnesota, police are allowed to "sting" alcohol and tobacco sellers by sending underage buyers into locations to attempt to buy without I.D. When an employee of a business sells to these buyers, it is an automatic fine for both the employee who sold, and the owner of the business.
When thinking about Kalil being charged, a "sting" type opperation comes to mind; they send in an underage person to attempt to buy, the employee never checks an I.D, and the employee/location "fails." But, the word "intervened" seems to suggest that the officer simply observed the sale, questioned the validity, I.Ded the kid on the spot, demanded a phone number to speak to a General Manager to find the name of the owner to press charges...
It's interesting to think of the procedural contrast of a sting operation vs. an officer "observing" a sale, and doing his own little investigation on the scene to figure out who to charge. It could have been figured out real quick with some back-end work... On the flip side, can an officer come up to you while your drinking a beer with your dinner and ask for I.D to verify your age? ... if he observes you weren't carded?
If the employee wasn't trained to sell alcohol and was selling alcohol, well... if they also received a fine for selling to a minor, I hope Kalil ends up paying that one too, just because he's such a nice guy.
