will have to watch it after I get home tonight, but once again thank you Pete for doing this and looking forward to it.

Maiden and Dethklok....  Awesome. :D

Man I don't know how those guys can play in that type of heat that is insane. I think I'd rather play in cold than heat like that. You can always put on more clothes.

I think that nationally it might be a bit of a suprise is because of the need to hype rookie QB's especially first round rookie QB's. I think he hit the nail on the head as far as having the deep ball down. Teddy probably doesn't have that part of the game down yet. Like he said he missed the one but then he came back and hit it again. He just needs to have more consistency. Whether Matt Cassel is consistent or not I don't know. I think what he had to say about playing with the 2nd and 3rd stringers in Preseason is dead on. It's good to see success but without the chance to get timing with the 1's he can't really be ready to step up and start.

Wow telling about Shaun Hill being the better QB between he and Ponder. Wouldn't have pegged that from Pete. Late round draft pick. That sounds about right to me. I don't think we would get much more than that for Ponder.

As far as Adrian and wanting Felton to be on the team. I don't like when players get too much sway in an organization. I think they should get their say and plead their case but in the end you can't give that type of control to the players. Just to be clear this is a hypothetical correct? Adrian is not making a stink about it is he?

I like Simpson's talent but he needs to stay on the field whether that be to health or suspensions. 3 weeks is a little more palatable but if we give him the spot he really really needs to make the most of it.

As always thanks for giving us this type of insight Pete. Look forward to this and excited to have this type of content this year!

Love the music segment!

As you can see, we will be talking to Pete about far more than footba this year

What it sounded like to me, is that with Hill having been in the offense, having taking the snaps in the offense, he is a much better QB for the team.  Coming in in the 4th week of preseason, one couldn't expect a QB to be better than another vet that has been with the team all year.

Pete is pretty honest on Ponder, but he also stood up for him saying he has lead the team to the playoffs, has starting experience, and that can't be discounted.

And to the slants, interesting thoughts Pete.  Did we see them with Cassel last year?  We definitely didn't run them with Ponder and I don't remember them with Cassel either.  Perhaps it was a coaching "oversight".  Interesting that slants are key routes with the play action, but as good as Favre was with slants, I dont' recall him being great at play action.

Ya, I did not know about the connection between slants and play action.  I may have to listen to the interview again.  Love this posts with Pete.  :)

Thanks for the great interview, Tom.  Pete does a great job with the Q&A.  I like the optimism for Pete has for the D.  Fun listen! :Vflag:

That I know of, AP has never complained. The questions you hear me asking, that are referenced to people on this board are very close to what they submitted. So CaActorVike asked the AP question.

Also, if you don't hear a person's name for a question I ask, it is usually a hot topic from the board this week (did Bridgewater warrant serious consideration as the starter, what is Ponder worth Ina trade, etc). The music questions were just to let people see a different side of Pete. He is a regular guy, who you want to have a beer with at a sport bar.
Can we keep this pinned for a bit? Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but hope to within the next day or two.

We will leave this pinned through the weekend. Typically, most interviews stay pinned for between 5 and 7 days. So, take your time in getting to this. Pete will be back next Tuesday with his pre-opener thoughts.

Okay, finally got the chance to listen to this. (I've had company pretty much non stop for the past month! - Not the same folks, all different & some unexpected)

Any way, I loved it. Thanks Pete for taking the time to do this & share your thoughts with us. I  am totally excited about our defense.

That was a good listen.  I'd have preferred to read it since I have a funky computer that doesn't do audio/video well, and I can read it a lot faster.

He made some good points on Ponder.  I don't agree, since I feel you could get the same production out of a street free agent like MBT, but really if you aren't getting anything of note for him and he remains the standup guy he's always been there isn't a need to jettison him.  I would take a 5th rounder for him without hesitation though.  That could net you another David Yankey type player, or Blair Walsh.  Those late picks have value.  One more point on Ponder, he's looked good in the preseason game here.  Should've had a TD even.  But we've all seen that out of him.  When he gets pressure put on him he self destructs.  That's his MO.  Hill knowing the playbook and having comparable talent = better option, definitely.  They still have no backup though I assume.

I think he's right on with the defensive value.  The talent is easily top 10.  It might take a while to get everyone on the same page.  I don't look at the statistical rankings to tell me who is good and who isn't though.  That is due 100% to what he alluded to there with the competition, facing 3 good offenses two times a year.  Meanwhile other teams go up against the Bills and Jaguars, or teams of that caliber.  The caliber of the defense should be top 10, with a good scheme finally in place.  I love the man defense we're playing, and every player looks better than they have in the past as a result.  I've always loathed that old defensive scheme, and this is more my style.  Cap'n was a great pickup.  You have to have a good nickel to cover the slot, and he'll be a great one.  That shuts down a lot of the short routes, usually slants, by the slot receiver that are a staple to moving the chains on 3rd downs and/or short yardage situations.  If you give that up all the time because your nickel corner is terrible, it's hard to get stops.  Robinson, in that last Titan's game, was in perfect position early on but Mettenberger and Hunter had a perfect pass/catch to beat him still, but he is there where he needs to be.  If he moves his arm a couple inches he bats the ball down.  If he turns around a second sooner, easy INT.  I think he'll come around, proving the 3rd CB is not a weakness.  I think Prater is just fine too if it comes to it.  I think we have at least 4 quality CBs.  I like Coleman and Blanton too, so not worried about the secondary at all.  I'm only worried about Barr and Brinkley on D.  Hopefully Cole starts, so then I'd only be worried about Barr, who I still expect to make some splash plays with his speed....which is why he's starting when he's clearly not ready....those splash plays he'll provide at times.

As for Felton, I think given how little he'll likely play, he isn't worth the cap space.  I would prefer to keep Line as a receiver and he looks to be developing as a blocker plus is a core special teamer.  Either way not a big deal to me since Felton is a really good lead blocker.  But I prefer a passing-oriented attack, so Line fits the bill more.

I have been looking for slants ever since we got Jennings.  He was always a product of the system and those slants in GB, so utilize his strengths.  He's great at that, and average or merely good at everything else.  Cassel, and Ponder both should've been good at that since they don't have a rocket.  There's virtually no risk of an INT as long as you make sure the LB isn't going to jump the route as Greenway did in week 1 or 2 (I forget which game it was now).  Or, well, if your throw is way off target it can be too of course.

Run to the Hills is a decent song.  I prefer Hall and Oates lol.

I agree that Ponder or anyone coming in at this point would have a difficult time unseating the guy that has time in the system. But I would think that by some point that if Ponder were a guy decent enough to trade for you'd be looking for him to be able to be the starter come midseason. Maybe not though maybe just trading to bring him in as a backup would be the plan all along. THat is if they were to trade for him.

Great stuff. Thanks Pete.

Very excited to hear your thoughts on the defense. I really see huge improvement this year. Top half isn't unreasonable or unrealistic. And no I didn't eat paint chips as a child. The right coaching, players and schemes coming together will show the importance of all factors.

I also liked that "players play and coaches coach" piece. It's so true. It's just in this day and age, more players are more vocal about their thoughts and opinions. Sometimes the media want to feed that. In Peterson's case, I think it's more about adjusting to change and trying to exert some control.

I didn't hear Hill being better than Ponder expressed at all. I just thought he was saying the comfort level with the offense was there.

Interesting insights about Jennings. Huge difference is Musgrave and his index card are gone. Norv is going to have fun opening things up and being creative.

Not surprised Cassel is the starter. I think the national and Minnesota media just want controversy for ratings.

I loved the PA and music comment. Lol.

I try my best to make these written, but with my travel schedule and the fact that we do these weekly, sometimes I just can't transcribe and write them in the time needed to keep them fresh.  (Any volunteers for weekly transcribing of Pete's thoughts?  You will get to hear the information before anyone else!  If so, PM me)

I thought that was perhaps the issue.  No problem.  I am sure some may read at work while they can't watch a video there too, so might be part of why it got less hits.  Thanks for the time you put into it.  Good interview.

Tom I am thinking about seeing if this works for transcribing interviews inthe future... Sorry this is off topic to the discussion.

Excellent interview thanks for taking time to do it.

Last day (Saturday) that this thread will be pinned, so catch it today, or see it in the article archive at any time

You can always put on more clothes.

Are we related? I say this often when explaining why I prefer cold weather.
