This is what I am most interested in watching (I know boring) as I really like Easton.

I didn’t watch a lot of Elflein in college but I like what I have read up on him about. People here say that he is limited at G… If that were true, then I would want him to maximize his talents and stay at C..

If you can play center well, you can play guard well also. Elflein will find a spot at one of those two positions.

That is kind of why I want Easton to win the C job and we can slide Elflein over to RG and we kill 2 birds with one stone for the next 7 years. I cant remember who said that Elflein is limited at the G position but if that’s true then keep where your talents are.

Agreed, I think that’s the best possible scenario. But Berger is the starter at RG this year, so Elflein might be top backup at center and RG.

You really think they will keep him out of the lineup after the pop warner squad we displayed last year? I am not so sure

If he doesn’t with the starting center job, yes, he’ll be a backup. Where else is he going to play? Berger is the starter at RG for 2017, period.

Our biggest problem last year was lack of depth and quality tackles.  Interior line was decent and a rookie won’t be a shoo in if everybody stays healthy.  Boone, Berger and Sirles won’t be easy to leapfrog with their experience in the system.

I see your point. I was more so saying will they really start Easton over Elflein if the battle is that close or will they just go with the high pick and role with him.

I know what we lacked last year with the oline. We had no depth and when people went down it was a clown show.

Isnt the main battle with C between Easton and Elflein though?

I think they would prefer Elflein to win the center job, but they know he’s a rookie and it takes time. So it could very well be that by the time training camp and preseason is over, Elflein wins the job. But Easton is going to give him a fight because he knows this is his opportunity. Just don’t know if he’s talented enough to hold off a guy like Elflein from a big time program like Ohio State. We’ll see.

Agreed…this isn’t debatable…him and Boone are the locks on the interior…

you were commenting on him vs Berger at RG if he loses out on C.  yes he is primarily in the center battle,  but the premise of the point was if he loses that battle wasnt it?

Would like to see that as well, as a 2nd day pick definitely has more upside than a UDFA.  But IMO the mental part of the game gives Easton the edge right now.  I think the question is, will Elflein take the job in TC or wait until next year.

Berger at guard needs a solid backup as well.  He missed time with multiple concussions last year and I think the next will be his last.  He has already said he will retire after the season, so we need depth there.  TJ, Sirles, Isadora, Kerin all fighting for scraps at this point.  So I don’t really see Elflein spending too much time learning that spot when he has one spot to learn already.

If it becomes clear that Easton will beat out Eflein for the center position I would not be surprised at all to see them get him reps at G in camp to see if he could be the primary G back up on either side of Easton or even displace one of the veterans as the season goes on.  I think they will do what ever they can to make sure they assemble the best talent at the back up spots regardless of a players primary position,  this year more than ever they will be looking for position flexibility across the front 5,  and wont settle for a sub par player just because he is a LT or what ever.  We can find a shitty T in free agency at any time,  IMO it will be more critical to keep the best lineman regardless of position and flexibility will be a huge plus.

At the OTA’s they was giving Clemmings reps at guard.

Right now with Easton having 3 years experience in the NFL and some size over Elflein I would give him the advantage.

But it’s a long season….

The Berger love has always baffled me. He’s not great at recognizing blitzes and making corresponding Line adjustments which makes his effectiveness at Center limited.

When he slid over to RG last year looked better than Fusco solely due to not getting knocked on his ass ten times a game.

But he got ZERO push into the Run Game and had issues in Pass Pro too, especially against blitzers.

Swing backup has always been his first, best use. Starting him at RG next season, especially at his age, doesn’t seem very smart to me.

i think his appreciation stems from the fact that when he steps in,  its usually for a struggling player that give the appearance of a greater improvement at the position than we actually get.  If he was such a much better player than why doesnt he generally win those jobs outright?  I think he is a nice versatile back up,  but i dont know that he is a shoe in for a starters role unless we are still a long way from solidifying the line for the future.

Berger is a good swing guy.  But I agree that he is limited as a starter, especially at center.  Not sure how he will do at guard for a full season.  IMO, he won’t make a full season with the concussion issues.  He was rated well as a run blocker, so he must be able to do that effectively, but I have never liked him at center because he struggles with the protections.

No matter which way you look at it, that there is competition for this spot, is a very very good thing. An even better thing would be Easton—a center only—winning that battle. That has a chance to improve the Vikings line in two spots.

I don’t agree that RG is Berger’s no matter what. Remember that Elflein played much better at right guard at OSU than at center. If Easton runs away with center, I could see Elflein getting some 1st team TC snaps at right guard and competing with Berger there.
